I had the Dslam discussion with the Bellsouth engineers just a couple of weeks ago, and like everything else, it all comes down to dollars and cents. My central office has DSL, but no Dslam, so the service ends less than a half-mile from my house.

Bellsouth won't even consider installing a Dslam in another year or two because of the cost, even though I was assured back in 1999 I would be able to subscribe within 6 months.
