[Philly] Traveling on Business

I'm coming to Philadelphia the week of September 16th. I'll be staying in Malvern and attending training in Newtown Square at SAP. I have a few questions.

Mass Transit:
What is safe? I've never been to the city and though I expect the train to be fine out in Malvern I'd like to know if there are places I should avoid. The training will be all-day, but I'd like to head into the city in the evenings. The hotel (Staybridge Suites) will be shuttling me to and from SAP's campus, so that isn't a concern.

Food:
I need some local eats! Assuming I can get around okay I'd like to get around the city in the evenings. What shouldn't I miss? Why should I try for if I have a chance?

Volunteer anything else you think I might need to know too. I like to capitalize on these company-funded trips!

PM me.
I work in town but from where I live I could spit to SAP's campus.
FYI Center City is safe until ~ 11:00 P.M. , but Philly has earned it's rep. as a tough town. You don't want to wander off the beaten path after dark. It's not cool.

Don't know how long you are staying, (Staybridge Suites is in a really weird part of The Upper Main Line. Not representative of the area.), but there's a ton to see and do in the western 'burbs as well. You might as well consider a trip to King of Prussia to the mega mall which is a few miles North on Rte 202.

Public trans kinda sucks outside Phila. (ain't that great in the city either), so consider renting a car because that's the only way to get to the good spots.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, and PM is sent.

I'm traveling with a co-worker who has a rental, but the company won't pay for each of us to have one, so I'm kinda stuck.

If you go dining, try the Rittenhouse Square area. If you stay around there, Walnut stree, 18th street, you'll be alrright. I live in Center City for about 30 years and never had a problem. It's when you go into the neighborhoods without knowing that you run a risk although South Philly in the Italian section is pretty safe.

So, according to a few topics here and a few other things I've read, Geno's Steaks seems like a touristy thing to do...and I don't want that.

As perilous a question as this might be, can you guys give me a few good options for local cheesesteaks? Especially in areas between the Airport, Downtown, Malvern, and King of Prussia (as we're apparently training up there and not on SAP's campus).

Thanks again, folks.

Where is the Staybridge Suites that you are staying at?

As far as Geno's being touristy? Only because it is in a lot of movies (along with Pat's located across the street). The street corner makes for a great movie location.

It is the real deal cheese steak. It is not a tourist trap, though you can get one just as good maybe better from any pizza place. In my mind the key is the roll. Look for a place with stacks of boxes from a local bakery. Then you know it will be fresh.

That's refreshing, at least. I was afraid I'd be walking into something like the View Bar on Times Square. =)

This StayBridge Suites is in Malvern, just off of US 30 (Lancaster Pike?).

While I generally shy from touristy things, you should do Geno's or Pat's. It's an outdoors thing, usually not too crowded, and as offical a 'Philly Cheesesteak' as you can get (although they may not be the *best* steaks...)
Just be sure you read up on how you're supposed to order

Besides, when "Invincible" or "Rocky" is on TV you can point to it and say "I ate a steak at that place"

Philadelphia was great, I had a lot of fun! I spent most of my time out in the burbs, KOP, Valley Forge, the hotel in Malvern. The first afternoon I was there I walked through the street market on my way to Geno's. Of course, me being the newbie, I screwed it up. How was I supposed to know that you had to order things and different windows? =)

I did some walking around the Valley Forge historical site. Battlefields have always interested me but I've seen so few. It was amazing to me to stand at the same overlooks as the revolutionaries, you really start to understand why they chose to camp on that hill. Possibly the most amazing thing was looking out at the old British entrenchments. Small mounds where they'd have dug in while under fire.

Oh, and I had some training thing in KOP all week, but that isn't important. I really had a great time in Philly.
