I liked version v5.4.0.14 in days when no tweak
worked for me and no other build seemed to meet
my expectations, i kept hoping the v7 releases
would be good enough until i moved to a distant
city where tweaking now works all the sudden...

The newer v7 FirmWares weren't helping when i
faced some severe noise issue so i climbed up the
tweaker's FirmWare spectrum which ends right at
v6.1.0.5, if we agree to ignore v6.1.4.6/v6.1.9.6
for practical purposes (these have nag traps to
make them 'DMT'-hostile)... If what you have is
satisfying and you require no tweaking abilities
then just stick to it and simply enjoy your luck!

The last FirmWare update available for Thomson's
SpeedTouch 5x6v5 (BANT-J) is v6.1.0.5 so you'd
need to search for 'ZZTXAA6.105.bin' as this build
is suitable for your HardWare, see the release note:

some HardWare failure would be to revert to the
previous FirmWare versions as these didn't cause
the ST546v6 to reboot. If 'DMT' still reboots the

Perhaps but that's the thing with static numbers: they don't
tell the whole story so you might not be so pleased with the
v6 FirmWare after a while. 478 CRC Errors a day is such a low
error rate it's difficult to distinguish what's marginal from
what's not. We'll sure read you with curiosity, in any case!

rates of a few thousand a day but i wasn't that familiar

need to collect a few long term curves in order to put

The Dslam is extremely close to my house. When a Bell tech parks his van next to it to do some work, I can see it from my front window. Unfortunately every once in a while I loose connectivity, usually shortly after 12:00am. Sometime rebooting the modem does not solve it and I am forced to call it in. Sometimes it comes back the next day without intervention. Sometimes the DSL light stay on yet nothing works. Since I now have the software, I will do my own line test next time it happens.

Are my HEC/CRC errors to be worried about or within norm?

thanks for your reply. Yes the line is as clean as can be. I have a direct line from the demarc box to the modem. I also have double filtered the entire house also from the demarc box. Strangely the OSLAM (or DSLAM) is only 100m away and I still have occasional issues. Teksavvy had a Bell tech come over and everything looked A OK according to his measurements. I begged him to put me on a different pair of wires going from the OSLAM to my house but he refused. So here I am considering firmwares before I cancel my DSL.

I will take your advice on taking 'STMT' before and after I upgrade my firmare. I will do it at different times of the day, for a few days. More specifically before 12:30am and after 12:30am. The reason being most of the times when things went sour, it was around 12:30am... Is this when Bell pushes out updates to their equipment?

More importantly, where do I get the tools to measure the 'STMT'? Where do I get the 7.4.3.2 firmware for the model 516v6?

FirmWare using long term curves to make comparisons;
as a consequence, we have no objective base on which
to decide what particular version to adopt... I've tried
them all, though... Personally, what i can tell you about
the Speedtouch FirmWares is that, of the dozen that i
once installed, the last release did earn my attention.

If i must give an advice then my suggestion would be
that you should collect a few 24 h 'STMT' curves and
then that you'd be better install v7.4.3.2 to compare!

I have got into the DMT tool (v7.35) but am missing the "modemoptions" tab - the 'experimental' box is greyed out - any ideas how I get it back?

I was getting spontaneous reboots with the new firmware and went back to 7.4.1.7

was hoping the SS4200 was more promissing in the CLI
department.  Does this product support, at the very
least, TelNet CLI sessions?  It's one thing to find
out that the D241 brand fails to fulfill the 'DMT'
TelNet script, it's another not to have any TelNet
server to connect to at all.  A TelNet capture would
be nice, it might give some clues about the SS4200.

The SS4200 rev. D241 is simply an excellent modem for marginal lines...at least in MY particular situation.

I have a ST516v6 and on the same line, its upload speed simply can't touch the SS4200.

My SS4200 can upload at over 83 kb/s while the ST516v6 can barely do 70 kb/s. In terms of download speeds, both are the roughly the same.

However, I have no idea why the SS4200 rev. D241 doesn't work with DMT Tool v.9.01. So in terms of stats, I have to rely on the modem's own interface.

SS4200's Gateway IP is 192.168.254.254, on port 23, but DMT Tool simply can't connect to it.

So although it is not a tweaker's modem, it is very good on marginal lines.

I start the wizard, direct it to the latest firmware (7.4.xx) and then it goes to the part where it says "starting upgrade mode". After that it seems to hang up on the "transferring..." part and the error that comes up is something like "The device stopped responding".

I look at the modem while this is going on, and it is still in upgrade mode with the lights flashing green and red.

My firewall is off, and any other software is closed so that isn't making any difference. I'm not sure if that bootp stuff would apply to me, but I don't want to try that because i'm scared i'll mess up my modem.

I've just upgraded my ST546 from 6.x to new v7.4.1.7 firmware.
Unfortunately, as you know, this version isn't more compatible with DMT.

FYI, I live in France, and my line is ADSL2+ has about 30 dB of attenuation.
With my old v6x firmware and DMT, I've tuned/achieved in download :
sync near 14 Mbits with sn 3.5 dB.
By some miracle - perhaps because I live in the country - no stability problem ;-)

A this time, with v7 firmware and no tuning, my values are : 13.2 Mbits with sn 6 dB
I am really interested to tune this v7 firmware, which seems to be better than the others,
to try to exceed 14 Mbits, by forcing sn to 3.5 or 4 dB.

Could someone please tell me if it's possible via Telnet instead of DMT ?

Considering you already got an interleaved profile
i find the CRC counts a bit high so it may help to
lower your UpStream speed, if that's not an issue.

The more i think of it, the more i'd be willing to
bet that Interleaved mode will allow 4032/512 Kbps
on this line. An RCO beyond 90 % must be expected
but FirmWare v7.4.1.7.0 (ZZQ0AA7417-AA) would make
that stable enough, hopefully... Perhaps 4032/384
Kbps Interleaved would be more even, it may not be
easy nor even possible to get Bell to cooperate so
all i can tell is that you got nothing to loose by
asking but lets not count on them to "experiment"!

Instead of 100Mbps full duplex, I switched the card to 10Mbps half duplex and completed the upgrade successfully. I found that each time I tried 100Mbps, the upgrade would fail. Not sure if that was the problem or my "third times the charm" routine worked but the upgrade was successful after that.

You are right, wont perform that well on a bad line (well at least line like mine - i dont wont to generalize lol)

As far as I am aware code/software is written by people. People are not perfect .. I think everyone can attest to that? If everyone and every product was perfect, what would be the point in research and development? What would be the point to trying to make devices more functional?

Can you name one product that is mass produced that has a fair price point that works perfectly under every possible situation? I can't.

What I can say is that SpeedTouch modems provide a cost efficient product that is consistent in its functionality and has a support team that tries to improve the device on a regular basis.

I can not speak for other ISPs but I can tell you that we have evaluated many other products. For the price, none of them compare to the SpeedTouch's versatility. As for trouble-shooting .. of course efficiency on the phone is important. However do we force our product on clients? No. Do we have a strong recommendation? Yes. Why? Which also makes the end user happier, as most clients don't want to be on the phone with tech support for hours trying to solve an issue.

As for Bell, we are not completely powerless. If we were, we wouldn't exist as people wouldn't bother dealing with us. Bell has spent vast amounts of money to setup a wholesale department just so that we can effectively and efficiently do business with them and clients/end users.

Of course we'd never try to develop a DSL modem. We are not in that line of business and why try to re-invent the wheel?

I believe I covered this with my opening statements. Companies employee people. People are not perfect. People write code that is not perfect. Therefore fixes to the code need to be made.

When it comes to availability of Firmware, Thomson does limit the distribution. Why? So when a Telco/ISP/DSL provider finds a very comfortable DSLAM/DSL-firmware compatibility level they can control who is running what firmware to increase efficiency by having consistency in the market place. If that doesn't make sense for a business and a consumer, please inform us what does!

What's the big deal about them using Broadcom chipsets?
When it was owned by Alcatel, they used Alcatel chipsets, which only make sense. When Thomson bought the electronics division of course they changed to a company they felt was more economically appealing, whats wrong with that? I do believe all companies do this? All companies tend to have alliances with other companies they are comfortable doing business with, at least as far as I know.

At the end of the day, my point is that SpeedTouch is a good product. Has a lot of functionality that both consumers and ISPs can agree. It functions consistently. It is cost effect.

If you want higher end functionality from a $100 device, try buying a Cisco 1720 Router with the WIC-ADSL card. See if matches the $100 price tag of a SpeedTouch. Cisco can definitely hold its own. As far as I see it, the SpeedTouch's functionality isn't that far off considering the price.

The HardWare is a v6 and its FirmWare a v7 so what
does it tell about the manufacturer's methodology?
That Thomson cares for its customers or that we're
purchasing unfinished devices, because of a rather
agressive marketing approach?...  I'm sorry to say
i'm no fortune teller and yet i find most unlikely
to be offered a ST546v7 by some ISPs like TekSavvy
in the future - not to mention they're aware of my
preferences as a customer.  Have you ever tried to
DownLoad your SpeedTouch's FirmWare from Thomson's
own web site during the last few months?  Mine all
came from alternative sources and quite frankly it
seemed to me Thomson was ready to drop their ST5x6
series months ago when i needed a FirmWare update.

The Speedtouch 5x6 must be re-evaluated seriously,
i'm confident valuable alternatives arrived on the
market while the 3rd-party ISPs were contemplating
a statu-quo.  Trouble-shooting is Paramount for us
since ISPs are totally powerless when Bell's phone
line suffers from physical disruptions and i doubt
they'd be willing to develop the resources which a
SpeedTouch actually supports even if they could!!!

I guess we can expect more releases after this one
but i begin to find it excessive to turn customers
into guinea-pigs for so long and Thomson knows it:
their "black-box" attitude came as a result of the
ISPs (their real customers) not wanting us to look
inside and i'm tempted to write it suits them well
knowing that at least one FirmWare caused the unit
to reboot when using 'DMT', a 3rd-party utility...

Certainly not Thomson and i foresee new SpeedTouch
series coming where most remaining holes have been
patched conveniently.  Other brands/models will be
built around the sacro-saint BroadCom ChipSet so i
hope one of them will be of the "Open" (GPL) type;
that would justify the price-tag of a SpeedTouch!!

I still believe, whenever new firmwares come out for all the different brands of DSL modems, it takes some time before all the Bell COs get them working in the DSLAMs. Some COs get them working faster, some later.

You might have some difficulties finding an exact sample of my Speedstream. It is a Bell-issued (with custom Symaptico firmware) Efficient Networks Speedstream 5200 E240. According to another poster in the know, it contains a TI AR5 ADSL chipset. Too bad this modem has to go back to Bell.

DMT Tool ver. 9.01 didn't completely work with this Speedstream because of its crippled firmware. It only showed the attenuation and SNR on the download side. On the whole, it feels snappier than the Speedtouch and has faster upload in bittorrent.

The ST516v6 I bought to replace this Speedstream is an OK modem. The amount of on-board RAM seems a little on the low side, only 8 MBs. For now, firmware 6.2.T will be the firmware of choice for my situation, I will give 7.1.4.7 another try in the future. I can't complain though, I bought this ST516v6 for dirt cheap.

In the end, the total perceivable performance of a modem can't depend solely on the firmware or attenuation or SNR, but has more to do with its construction (on-board memory and the chipset).

My evaluation of v5.3.2.6 and v5.3.3.4 didn't last
long because newer FirmWares kept coming in at the
time but i do recall being surprized how high they

I use both my Bell Speedstream and my ST516v6 in "dumb" bridge mode. I let my Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato firmware handle the PPPoE connection.

But regardless of this, I tried both with or without my Linksys router ie, meaning using the modems directly in their Routed mode. The Bell Speedstream consistently outperforms my ST516v6 in uTorrent seeding upload speed by 5 to 10 kB/s. Curiously enough, they perform identically in ordinary speed tests like Speakeasy, Mountain Cable or Cogeco.

As for the firmware issue, 7.x.x.x series has a lot of difficulties for me to sync. 7.4.1.7 managed to sync but only after 5 minutes of the DSL light blinking before going solid green. I lost connection within 30 mins. I managed to grab a DMT screenshot though.

Downgrading back to 6.2.29.0 (6.2.T) I get sync very quickly and solid green all the time. I don't think my ST516v6 is defective though. That is why I think the DSLAM isn't ready for the new firmware, despite that fact that it is Alcatel equipment on the CO's side.

As you can see, firmware 7.4.1.7 didn't give me too much improvement for me. It knocked 1 dB off the upstream attenuation compared to 6.2.29.0.

compromize when it comes to CPE devices and they'd
possibly do whatever they can to keep it exclusive
(by branding its FirmWare, for example);  how does
Bell evaluate value remains unknown to me, though.

I'm confident Bell has laboratory facilities where
distance, cross-talk, noise, etc. can be simulated
easily and i'm now as confident that the 3rd-party
ISPs ain't got the means to implement that kind of
resource.  I may be mistaking but chances are Bell
chose to provide their customers with some Siemens
devices because of items like the SNR Margin, etc.
while their 3rd-party partners sell the SpeedTouch
based on "return rates".  For customers like us it
appears there's little choice but to try out every
single FirmWare which Thomson has released lately:

Anyway, as DKS points out, it's one thing to get a
connection, it's not the same to be satisfied with
it.  That's where your SNR Margin figures and 24 h
Error Rate (aka "Noise") curve come to play:  with
litle SNR and too many errors the bets are open...
