2 HD streams

Just had a U-verse tech support guy tell me that they're working on bandwidth upgrades, and intend to support 2 HD streams by the end of this year. Interesting, if true.

I sure hope it does not stop at 2. While it would make HD more functional it still would not really cover the needs of my current house (3 HD TVs and wildly different viewing habits). Oh well it will eventually improve to where I could use it it I do not find a better alternative in the meantime. Still looking for something better than Comcast and dish though. It is difficult to get very excited about 2 HD streams.

I'd be VERY surprised if it happened by the end of the year

Virtually everyone with U-Verse now has the bandwidth at 27 mbps to support two HD streams if you believe the various slides that AT&T has posted at investor presentations. This suggests that the absence of the second HD stream is a Microsoft IPTV programming problem and not a lack of bandwidth.

doesn't Verizon FiOS use MS IPTV software too? How could this be a software limitation? 27mbps is barely enough to deliver 2 HD streams, 2 SD streams and 6/1 internet...

I don't think Verizon uses MS software. If you believe their slides: »Re: How much bandwidth is available to a VRAD?, then the implication is that AT&T is covering for a MS dual-HD stream software limitation right now. Admittedly this is reading between the lines, but often problems are presented this way -- very subtly.

Verizon got tired of waiting for microsoft and developed a modified version of microsoft IPTV software.

I seriously doubt that microsoft is responsible for uverse problems. Many other carriers like British, Deutshe and Slovak telecom, Singtel, Swisscom and many other use the same technology including AT&T.

The only problems I've seen with microsoft software is with AT&T. Hmmm I wonder why?

So who else has deloyed iptv over vdsl and is supplying more than 1 HDTV stream with ms software?

Why is ATT FTTP locations still limited to 1 HD stream?

IT is possible that this is a MS problem, but i doubt we will ever actually know.

I assume the reason why FTTP locations are limited to 1 HD stream is that AT&T wants to make uverse offerings universal no matter what platform it's being provided over, to avoid confusion. I think it's silly and short sighted. What's the point of rolling out FTTP if you're going to push DSL quality service through it?

I'm pretty sure MarkyD is aware of that considering that he is has posted numerous times that he ( and I ) are served by FTTP.

I also am pretty sure that he would disagree with your smiley face emoticon since the FTTP service frankly sucks.

I suppose we should be grateful that it doesn't suck as much as it used to. I rememeber in years past fiber served customers were either stuck with 1.5MB service or no service at all since no copper meant no DSL.

I guess it's an extra hard pill for me to swallow because the house I used to own in Virginia got FiOS about 1 month after I moved to Texas...

I'm not grateful for crap. it just defies all logic that AT&T would push such pathetic service over FIBER!!! Why go to the expense...nevermind. You know what I'm going to say, and so does everyone else here.

All I know is this. Linking my in-home lab and my friend's lab via EoIP, even though we both have FTTP via AT&T, is going to just be too slow to be useful. So, I'm bypassing AT&T completely and setting up a wireless link between our houses =)

Good example. Back in 1996 I had one of the first cable modems ( BayNetworks ) by Jones Internet Channel. While the internet gateway sucked ( 4 T1's for 1500 customers ) the LAN was awesome. I was using WINNT 4.0 back then and you could just browse the cloud. All kinds of `neighbors` had `public` shares and you could easily get 10MB across the cloud.

These days the download to the internet has greatly improved, but the upload and the near host speed has drastically decreased.
