[connectivity] Lightning

Just wondering if anyone has ever found a resolution to this problem of disconnects during thunder storms ? Has anyone tried contacting Verizon during a storm to report this problem ? We are currently having a storm and I am considering making the call. Blah

Exactly what problem are you referring too? ADSL, since it uses a copper circuit, is susceptible to impulse noise during lighting storms. The ADSL protocols were designed with that knowledge and unless lightning is very near any disturbances should be largely invisible.

Even if modem loses sync router should quickly reestablish the link causing minimum inconvenience.

You probably shouldn't be online during a thunder storm, better yet you should unplug your modem, and PC, encluding the telephone line. Storms only last a half hour at most, best to be safe rather than sorry. I seen it happen even when they were using a good surge protector.

I hear ya Borredo. But the storms in question are generally quite far away and often there is not even audible thunder. We have a stretch of old unshielded (or untwisted I forget what the repair guy told me once) wire that goes from the road to our home could this be causing the problem ? It just seems as though our line is far too flakey when any kind of lightning is in the area with 20 - 30 disconnects in an hour or two.

Well, at least I'm not alone
My DSL works great until there is a thunderstorm in the area. Like clockwork, before the rain or wind arrives but there's rumbling off in the distance (15-20mi away perhaps), the DSL starts losing sync often. Then it seems once the frull bunt of the storm is overhead, it's fine. So I'm fairly certain it's not water infiltration. After having Verizon come out on a few perfectly clear days and finding nothing wrong, I gave up having them try and fix the problem. It's a minor annoyance as the DSL does resync pretty quickly. The biggest issue is that if it takes longer than 30-35 seconds to resync, PPPoE drops and I get a new IP address, which means reestablishing all my remote logins. I'm switching to static ip in the hopes of getting around that issue.
I should also note, this isn't my first experience with DSL. My parents have had Speakeasy over Covad for several years now and I can't recall their DSL ever going out due to lightning (and they're further from the CO than I am). However, to be fair, they also have a static ip, so it's possible I just never noticed it.

It's a limitation that can happen. I've never experienced it at all. Maybe because I'm buried and my lines are newer and better shielded. Who knows?
