tempnexus : I dump my ESET folder onto my USB drive and run NOD32.exe to scan it off the USB drive. You have to reconfigure the SETUP (check all the check boxes to scan inside packers, compressed files and use heuritics) but that only takes 1 min. Scans perfect BUT DOES NOT SCAN MEMORY.

anon : Programs like SSM, ProSecurity and the free version of Process Guard can protect your AV and any other apps (e.g. your firewall) from being terminated. Even the free versions of SSM and ProSecurity can do this. ProcessGuard is probably easier to set up though, imo.

There are other HIPS programs that do this as well. Also most good HIPS will prevent the virus from starting in the first place.

That why it's smart to run one of these HIPS programs along with your AV.
Dagda1175 : Does this exist? Resident antivirus programs seem vulternable to me. of course I know theyre generally helpful but what about viruses that are written in part to shut down antivirus programs it finds? I thought it might be good to have a non resident antivirus either on a usb drive or burned to cd.
