Re: [billing] New DSL Rate Hike

anon : Warning Long Story.....I got the same email and not really knowing any better I signed up or more correctly put renewed online. After a couple of days I started to think hey maybe now is a good time to ask them if I could get a new Verizon wireless modem/router. When I moved a couple years ago and transferred my service I tried to set up wireless again with my Motorola wireless device. I tried for hours at a time for a couple of days no luck. I gave up and just ran a 100 ft cat5 Ethernet cord all around my house. Crazy right, especially knowing that about 8 months ago I hooked up my mother in laws dsl with Verizon and wireless and it was pretty simple. So back to the current situation, I called and talked to a guy and seemed like it would be easy he said all I would have to do was to sign up for the $1.00 a month maintenance plan and they would ship the wireless modem. I did and a modem came. Soon as I opened it I saw that it was not a wireless modem. Here is where the fighting began. I called them back and because of the computerized customer service system I always would start out talking to the wrong people and they all have different answers and then I get to the billing dept. I reached the billing dept, again my 3rd day of calling them and told my problem the lady Ms. Scott could offer no help. Said I would have to pay $69 bucks for the wireless and the $50 bucks my mother in law paid was only for new customers. So I told her so you all value new customers more than loyal customers since I had been a DSL customer for at least 4 years. She said that is why they lowered the price from $90 bucks because they had been getting complaints. I said ok let me speak with a supervisor she said no supervisors. I said give me a email address that I could email my concerns. She said no email address then I said give me a address where I could mail my concerns and she finally gave that a P.O. Box in Trenton NJ. Then I even used the chat pages to speak to support no help there only confirming that different departments handling different things and the tech chat folks couldn't even access the account for that needed billing dept. I said I never want to talk to billing again. Then I had a thought, I had remembered maybe 6-7 years ago sprintpcssux.com so I did a internet search on Verizon sucks and came up with a bunch of sites including this one. I found this thread and read it called the 1-800-358-2076 (retention #) Completely opposite response. No initial hold time. I explained the problem nicely and to the point I told her the other rep gave me the option of cancelling my service and coming in as a new customer taking 5 days to 3 weeks. Got a solution, very nice lady...She said the were shipping me the new wireless modem, and canceling the service plan the guy put me on and putting me on the one for the wireless modem. 1 Stop shop. We will see if it comes in and how this ends so I will update in a week or so. Thanks to all for the post and the info. I needed it.

I too have been on a grandfathered plan of one sort or another since Feb 2000. The "greatrate" web page did not work, so I called the number. After listening to the interminable music, I hung up and called back and this time I asked the computer voice for "retention" (which it interpreted as "cancellation"). The retention office answers their calls quicker than the regular billing office. After telling the rep firmly that I have been a loyal customer for over 7 years, from before Verizon was born (I still use the BellAtlantic domain for email...), have been receiving their best rate all this time, and I expected that to continue. She put me in for the introductory (hah) price plan of $19.95 for the next 6 mos. and then back up to $29.95 for the second 6 mos. I guess this is the game we have to play with them now.

But she saved the best part for last... When she gave me the confirmation number, it was "C as in Charlie, I as in Ivan, C as in..."
e_identity : Here is my email (I am in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA):

Our records indicate that you currently subscribe to a Verizon High Speed Internet on a month to month plan. We are writing to inform you that your rate for your High Speed Internet package is changing to $33.99 per month.* [* "Additional surcharges, taxes and fees may apply."] Your new rate will take effect in no less than 30 days and you will see the new rate within two billing cycles.

If you are interested in other plans that may lower your rate, please go to www.verizon.net/greatrate or call 1-800-567-6789.

Seems like the new rate varies. I had trouble accessing the verizon.net site using Firefox w/ Noscript (something about XSS problems).

Update: I called the telephone number in the email--long, long, long time on hold. When an operator answered, I was told that my new rate was $33.99 w/o a one year committment or $31.99 w/ a one year committment (up from $29.99 w/o any committment). I asked for the first 30 day free/$19.99 1st 6 mos./$29.99 thereafter/$25 gift card deal on the verizon internet page (»www22.verizon.com/content/consum···lans.htm). I was told that deal was not available to me. I stated that Comcast looked like a better deal w/ $20/month first 6 mos/ $100 back (See »www.comcastspecial.com/internet.···j:552179) I asked how to go about cancelling Verizon (I got the sense that actually asking to cancel is critical to getting to the next step). The operator connected me to retention (800-358-2076). Retention asked whether I was concerned about price or performance. I said price and described the rates offered by the previous operator. The person I spoke to said, "I can do better than that...." and offered $19.99 1st 6mos/$29.99 thereafter w/ 1 year committment (no gift card or 30 days free). I asked about speed and was told it would be 3.0 down. I said I did a speed test last night and got 1.5 down. He said he would ask the tech folks to upgrade me to 3.0 if that was available at my distance from the CO. He said if my account started to be slow, that I should ask for a new modem b/c they only last two years. I replied that mine functioned fine but was more than two years old. He offered to send a new Gateway Actiontec modem/router (wired and wireless) for free. He said I could use the new modem or not at my choice and that it retailed for $90. I accepted the deal.

So I would have paid $29.99/month for 1.5mbps down for the next year while using my old modem ($359.88 paid to verizon). Instead, I'll be paying an annual total of $299.88 ($60.00 less) for 3.0 down (if available) plus I'll have a new $90 modem). Total loss to Verizon over the next year: $150 ($60 lower payments plus retail cost of modem). Had I gone for the 12 mos committment at $31.99/mo, Verizon would have made an extra $24/year. Hmmm.

I am not happy about these rate hike shenanigans and feel no customer loyalty, but I'll stick around for the time being for the same reason I originally signed up for Verizon: its the cheapest broadband alternative.

e_identity
