It kept going up and up thinking I had a good deal at first. I gave up the 3mbit, asked for the slowest cheapest dsl, even though 3 mbit is available.(just yesterday after a couple of years) I learned something interesting about 3 mbit. there are fewer places that let 3 mbit happen than I wasn't paying attention to. Speed tests and updating windows at 400kbyte/sec is not the whole internet. To my own embarrassing epiphany, I did not know my service changed until updating a large gamer file.I went more than a day at 90 kbyte dl and 16kb uplaod and had no clues it even changed to slower account! Given the dynamics of loss in speeds everyday, I do not regret my move. If to give advice, go for the slower setup. when 3mbit is 20 bucks a month someone finally got thier head out of thier greedy butt and is offering common sense. mine climbed to 39.99 and stayed there. Ridiculous. I am assured now to be 16 bucks cheaper a month with no silent price creeping hike. Not to mentiuon that dogwhistle squeal that mysteriously left my working space.

Edit: After about 15 mins on hold, I finally got to talk to someone. I was told that there was no grandfathering and if I was promised the $29.95 price I was mis-informed, and the lowest price I could get would be $31.95 a month with a yr committment BUT my speed would increase for free to 3.2 from 1.5. I asked what the price would be if I kept the 1.5 and she said it would be $31.95 as well, but if I wanted something lower I could go to the 700 speed. I ended the call by telling her I'd think about it, I plan to call back later today and see what other story I can get with someone else.

Brunswick is in GWI land though right? I plan on it as soon as my dirt cheap promo is up. P.S. the equivalent DSL from gwi.net (ME & NH) costs $55-60 per month with 5 mailboxes, compared to $30-37 from Verizon. Plus gwi.net favors land-line subsidies - what a joke!

Our records indicate that you currently subscribe to a Verizon High Speed Internet on a month to month plan. If you are interested in other plans that may lower your rate, please go to www.verizon.net/greatrate or call 1-800-567-6789.
Seems like the new rate varies. I had trouble accessing the verizon.net site using Firefox w/ Noscript (something about XSS problems).
Update: I called the telephone number in the email--long, long, long time on hold. When an operator answered, I was told that my new rate was $33.99 w/o a one year committment or $31.99 w/ a one year committment (up from $29.99 w/o any committment). I asked for the first 30 day free/$19.99 1st 6 mos./$29.99 thereafter/$25 gift card deal on the verizon internet page (»www22.verizon.com/content/consum···lans.htm). I was told that deal was not available to me. I stated that Comcast looked like a better deal w/ $20/month first 6 mos/ $100 back (See »www.comcastspecial.com/internet.···j:552179) I asked how to go about cancelling Verizon (I got the sense that actually asking to cancel is critical to getting to the next step). The operator connected me to retention (800-358-2076). Retention asked whether I was concerned about price or performance. I said price and described the rates offered by the previous operator. The person I spoke to said, "I can do better than that...." and offered $19.99 1st 6mos/$29.99 thereafter w/ 1 year committment (no gift card or 30 days free). I asked about speed and was told it would be 3.0 down. I said I did a speed test last night and got 1.5 down. He said he would ask the tech folks to upgrade me to 3.0 if that was available at my distance from the CO. He said if my account started to be slow, that I should ask for a new modem b/c they only last two years. I replied that mine functioned fine but was more than two years old. He offered to send a new Gateway Actiontec modem/router (wired and wireless) for free. He said I could use the new modem or not at my choice and that it retailed for $90. I accepted the deal.
So I would have paid $29.99/month for 1.5mbps down for the next year while using my old modem ($359.88 paid to verizon). Instead, I'll be paying an annual total of $299.88 ($60.00 less) for 3.0 down (if available) plus I'll have a new $90 modem). Total loss to Verizon over the next year: $150 ($60 lower payments plus retail cost of modem). Had I gone for the 12 mos committment at $31.99/mo, Verizon would have made an extra $24/year. Hmmm.
I am not happy about these rate hike shenanigans and feel no customer loyalty, but I'll stick around for the time being for the same reason I originally signed up for Verizon: its the cheapest broadband alternative.

In the past, a "bundle" discount was $5.00 off...now it *appears* to be only $4.00...
If we switch to a year commitment...do we still get the advertised rate of $19.99 for 6 months...then $29.99 for the remainder...or is that only for new customers?
I'd actually pay the extra $4.00/month...but I'd want them to give me 3 Meg service no matter what my distance is (well...whatever the system stabilizes me at anyway).
I wouldn't mess with billing...I'd call Retentions right off the bat for this one.

I couldnt log into the www.verizon.net/greatrate page either. So I logged in to my Verizon account page & there were two sections I hadnt noticed before, current plan and Other Available Plan: Get a big discount when you sign up for a One Year Commitment
But that link for Other plan one year commitment didnt work either. Ill try it again later. $4/month increase is a lot, Ill go with a year plan to keep my current rate.

I have the 3Mb rate and the email states $33.99 per month.* *Additional surcharges, taxes and fees may apply. Your monthly price may be influenced by several factors including your speed selection, whether or not you sign up for a minimum term..
I also tried the "Other plans available: Get a big discount when you sign up for a One Year Commitment" in my account and it tells me to call the 800# which isn't accepting billing calls until after 8AM.

| I got this email last night (I'm in PA, so I was going from $29.99 to $33.99).
Called billing this morning and didn't get anywhere, so I spoke with a very nice lady in Retention and she offered to actually get me in at $19.99 for 6 months, and then increasing back up to my current rate of $29.99 for another six months, with no change in speed as long as I signed up for a one year commitment(I'm at the 3/1.5)!
She did say we would probably get a letter at the end of the time frame, and she wasn't sure what they could offer me at that time, but that the new pricing would take effect immediately.
I'm happy enough with the service, so I think it's fair deal. As I explained to her, the only way I'd be willing to pay more for this is if/when they start offering FIOS in my area, which is hopefully coming soon.

| I got the same email, but the quoted new rate is $33.95 (I'm in VA). I too have been on a grandfathered plan of one sort or another since Feb 2000. The "greatrate" web page did not work, so I called the number. After listening to the interminable music, I hung up and called back and this time I asked the computer voice for "retention" (which it interpreted as "cancellation"). The retention office answers their calls quicker than the regular billing office. After telling the rep firmly that I have been a loyal customer for over 7 years, from before Verizon was born (I still use the BellAtlantic domain for email...), have been receiving their best rate all this time, and I expected that to continue. She put me in for the introductory (hah) price plan of $19.95 for the next 6 mos. and then back up to $29.95 for the second 6 mos. I guess this is the game we have to play with them now.
But she saved the best part for last... When she gave me the confirmation number, it was "C as in Charlie, I as in Ivan, C as in..." I as in Ivan? WTF?

| Re: [billing] New DSL Rate Hike In my experience, it doesn't work that way.
They aren't smart enough to make things effective as of the date of your next billing cycle (the easy way)...they will make things effective immediately (the hard way).
Since everyone is billed a month in advance, the Billing Department will credit you for your unused service (current month-to-month plan), then re-bill you for your new plan....with a possible "partial use" credit/charge...as of the date the "new service" actually takes effect.
It may take months for them to get the actually billing straight!
Sorry...not for me. I already went throught this once...never again.
I was just reading my TOS...and it does say that you are allowed to "take advantage" of any "special pricing promotion"...but only once during any 12 month period (Section 13.5 in my TOS...which is Version: 1003).
So Verizon really isn't doing anything *special* for us at this point.
Thanks. | |

True, the billing departments throughout Verizon (landline, DSL, and cell) are notorious for their ineptness, with many months required for their "credit in the next billing cycle" to finally come out where it should (including credits for the late charges assessed by the system when you don't pay in full for things you didn't order). But given that they've decided to all of a sudden raise the price for their long-time loyal customers to 40% more than they are charging new customers for the same service, you do what you have to. I'm not as concerned whether they make the effective date today or next month.

I've gone through many problems with the Verizon billing, the worst being when they lost a payment we made to them electronically using their own online system (one reason we always pay by physical check now)! So I'm used to them screwing up, and in fact I expect it.
I even told the representative that I'd probably have to be calling back soon as any time anything is changed on the billing side, inevitably something happens to my service. She, of course, assured me this wouldn't happen, but I'm not holding my breath.
It's a hassle, but in the end I always end up with numerous credits and free months of service due to Verizon's screw-ups, so I guess it's not all bad...
And if it happens again in this instance, you can bet I'll end up with even more free service/credits.

3 edits | I also received the e-mail,but it was in their spam folder, if I had not checked I would not have received it--unbelievable. My rate was to go too $33.99 a month
I called billing and they showed me at 768/128, even though i have had 1500/128 for a couple of years plus, and the could not change the records. they switched me to tech support, and I got somebody with an east Endian accent who could not really underst that I wanted provising to correct my records, I then talked to presidential appeals who took the information and said they would forward it to Verizon DSL, and they would call me.
I then called the retention number 800-358-2076 from one of the posts before. This number was not for my area, and they switched to to a retention operator for Oregon (She gave me this #877-500-8951). I explained the situation and she looked up my records which showed the 1500/128--surprised me that she had the correct info.
She offered to change my bill to $19.95 for six months and then $29,95 for the next six months.
Problem solved--God it's difficult working with Verizon--retention seems the way to go. BTW, I was connected almost immediately without waits on both retention hookups.

I am coming to the end of a one year contract, paying $17.99 per month for Pro, and expect the price to rise to $24.99 per month; assuming AT&T doesn't start jacking the prices around the way that Verizon is now doing. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

Sure, if they roll out Fios in my area I'll switch, but for now it's Goodbye Verizon DSL, Goodbye Verizon landline.

| I received this email on 6/27/2007:
Dear Verizon High Speed Internet Customer,
Our records indicate that you currently subscribe to a Verizon High Speed Internet plan and your one-year commitment has been completed or will soon be completed. We are writing to inform you that your rate for your High Speed Internet package is changing to $33.99 per month.* Your new rate will take effect in no less than 30 days and you will see the new rate within two billing cycles. Your service will automatically continue, with no term commitment or early termination fee. If you are interested in other plans that may lower your rate, please go to www.verizon.net/greatrate or call 1-800-567-6789.
Verizon Online remains committed to ensuring that we remain the best value in Broadband and will continue to keep prices affordable to our customers.
Thank you for being a Verizon High Speed Internet customer. We appreciate your business and we look forward to continuing to serve you.

*Additional surcharges, taxes and fees may apply. Your monthly price may be influenced by several factors including your speed selection, whether or not you sign up for a minimum term, whether your Verizon Online service is provided as part of a service bundle or package, and the premium online service you select.
Then on 6/30/2007 I received this Email.
Dear Verizon High Speed Internet Customer,
We mistakenly sent you an email this week advising that the monthly price for your Verizon High Speed Internet service would increase. That message was sent to you in error, so please disregard it. Your price will not be increasing as that email indicated. We apologize for any confusion our prior email may have caused.

It certainly looks like another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.
As a communications company, they appear to be anything but that!!!!!

| I don't think it is regonal pricing. I have 3/768 never attained that by the way in almost a year now I am @ $29.99 on a year contract and got the email from customer care that my rate would go up to $33.99. Then the next day I got a email stating that it was a mistake.
I wouldn't mind going FIOS but Verizon doesn't offer it here yet. But I did put myself on the sngup for it when it becomes available in my area. I do think that they are forcing people to do the FIOS if it is available in heir area though.
Time will tell won't it | |

| I got this letter back in March telling me I would no longer get the $29.99 rate:
"Dear Verizon Online Member,
This letter is to inform you that we are no longer offering the Verizon High Speed Internet plan that provided you an approximately $8.00 discount off of our standard monthly rate of $37.99. To discuss our latest discounted offers, please contact your local Verizon business office.
Your Verizon High Speed Internet DSL service will not change, however, the new price for your service will be $32.99 per month, an increase of $3 per month from your previous rate. This is still a $5.00 discount off of our standard monthly rate for our month to month plan, and there is no term commitment required to keep this preferred monthly price.
Unless you switch to a different Verizon High Speed Internet plan, your new rate of $32.99 will become effective within the next 1-2 bill cycles, but no earlier than 30 days from the date of this letter.
In addition to our month to month plans, Verizon has several low-cost annual plan options available that may save you money. To find the pricing plan that is best for you, you can visit our website at www.verizon.net/greatrate, or call the Verizon Online customer service telephone number on your bill
We at Verizon remain committed to bringing you the best value in broadband, and we are working hard to offer different pricing plans that help keep prices affordable.
Thank you for being a Verizon High Speed Internet customer. We appreciate your business and we look forward to continuing to serve you.
Sincerely, Verizon Online"
When I called the local office they could only offer me FIOS, which I don't want, so I was billed at the $32.99 rate.
Then I saw an ad in my bill about a "bundle" discount. Since I already have the phone, dsl and our cel phones on one bill I called and inquired about getting a discount. They said I qualified and could get a $13 discount on dsl and $9.99 discount on the phone.
Unfortunately, they reduced my dsl from 1.5 to a 384 package . This was a mistake and after about an hour on the phone, they gave me the 3/768 speed. I have finally seen the discount on my latest bill (although they made a mistake with that too) but next bill should correctly reflect this.
If anyone has, or wants to bundle your bills onto one bill, you can get this discount. It is offered for one year.
Sincerely, Libra | |

| If you are a current customer and got in on this offer, dont forget to check your billing statement to make sure you get the correct discount.
I called Retention on June 28 and got in on the 1-year plan with $19.95 for 6 months then 29.95 for 6 months. The CSR said my 1-year plan would start in June, and Id get refunded back credit of $10 for June.
Well, of course that isnt what happened. I did get billed the correct amount for July.
But my billing statement shows a rate adjustment for 3 days in June giving me the new rate and discount for 3 days in June, June 28-30, not the entire month of June. So I got a discount of $1.00 instead of $10.00. Ill be calling them tomorrow.

| Mine has been $29.95 since I've had it. And just recently it dropped it $24.99. Hey I'm not complaining. But I believe it is because I get everything through verizon (dsl, directv, unlimited calling). Before I had directv through them my bill always read: DSL: $37.95 - $8.00 bundle discount = $29.95
Since I've had DTV through them my bill has read: DSL: $37.99 - $13.00 triple bundle discount = $24.99
Bundling all 3 services with verizon was the best move I've ever made. So for those of you with the rate increases, it is simple.
