Have you spoken to Retentions? Presidential Appeals? The entire state of NJ can get 768 for $15 and 3.0 for $30 except you? Hell, I'd file with the BBB on this one.

I called billing they said its 39.99 for 768/ 138 for where i live.. If i don't like it the can cancel any time..Or sign up from a year contract. I don't want to sign up. I can't get cable so I am stuck. Filing with the BBB might be a option. I will have to call them and see what they say. is every one bill worded the same ? Mine says enhanced Verizon DSL (B) 39.99

I think that is the misunderstanding - I and I assume most of the other posters were talking about year contract price. Given the large difference in price makes sense to opt for the year, $360 per year vs $480.

Since you cannot get Cable what other options do you have? Why the reluctance to go with a year contract? I'm on my fifth year with Verizon.

dei2,

I just went to Verizon's sight, and used a random phone number for Willingoro to see if it qualified for DSL, which it did. Below is what is indicated the cost is for, month to month, and no commitment.

Month-to-Month Package
$37.99/mo. with no commitment required.
Modem included. Up to 3.0 Mbps/768 Kbps.

That is for the 3.0 Mbps/768 Kbps package! I'd call them back and tell them that's want you want. If you don't want to do that, sign up for a 1 year contract. If you decide to drop it before the end, the early termination fee is $79. That's only 2 months at the rate your paying now! You say you've been with them for 2 years. The amount of money you would've saved with a contract, would have been more than the $79 it would cost to cancel it.

I have been with them since they were bell Atlantic.... They wont let me have 3mbs due to underground cable issues. From the CO to the node 3 house down from me. Last time I called about going to 1.5 they gave me two ways to change speeds. One drop dsl for 30days then resign up at new speed . The second was to have a second line run once dsl is running on that drop dsl on the the first line. I don't get why they work that way at all.. My underground line is only a year old since the guy next door accidentally cut it gardening with his tractor. I am starting to wonder why when I call India they ask ever time if this is home or business DSl.. If its only 79$ to drop them I might have to ask what rate the will give me if i go for a year.

dei2,
As suggested by Jodokast96. I would contact Retentions/Presidential Appeals, and ask them why you are being charged more than the current monthly rate for 3Mb, when you only have the 768Kb plan, and always have. You might be able to use that fact to get them to change you to 1.5, without dropping existing DSL first. I would also want credit for the over charge. It has been my experience, "if you don't like the first answer you are given, call back and speak to someone else". Also ask to speak with a billing supervisor. You'd be surprised. "He who doesn't ask, doesn't get"

If you have had verizon dsl for awhile, you still might be on a frame relay circuit and locked into the old package system. What kind of modem do you have? I you have a westell or actiontec you are on ATM. If you have the older fujitsu, you are on frame relay. If you have a fujitsu you might want to try cancelling your service and ordering it again, which then they would give you a newer westell modem and put you on a westell circuit with westell pricing.

I have an old bell Atlantic westell... What i have found out on pricing is.. When it was bell Atlantic DSL you had dial up as back up included in the price. Verizon Never killed off my dial up. Nor listed it on the billing only enhanced DSL Line (B).. So i have been paying for some kine of business DSL plan with dial up back up. I currently have a case with the BB filed as to why this was no Clarey listed on any billing. I have to call the state utilities commission next, see what law is about unclear billing. I have payed the same rate since Verizon bough bell Atlantic. I just tested the dail up and my same dsl password and user name works on the dail up system. This whole case could be come interesting. I never knew I had dial up as back up and they were charging me for it. Know wonder why ever time i called India they asked if this was business plan.

dei2, I also had the original BellAtlantic DSL with the old model C Westell with the BellAtlantic logo on the top (I've had it since Feb. 2000). The original plan included free dial-up. About 2-3 years after the merger that created Verizon, they rolled out some higher speeds, but the plan did not include free dial-up anymore; a supplemental dial-up account was available for something like $8/mo. Existing customers could request a free upgrade to the new speeds, but in exchange, their dial-up was terminated or charged the supplemental fee if still desired. I didn't need another dial-up account so I took the speed boost. Don't know what it would have looked like on the monthly bill.

Based on your pricing of just under $40, I doubt that you have business service. Business service was in the $80-90+ range and included stuff like static IPs, service-level guarantees, and higher upload speeds. I suspect your price simply includes the basic dial-up fee over and above the $30 DSL fee. The question of business or residential when calling India is only to determine if they need to jump through the higher hoops required under the business service level agreement or just read you the basic script for residential technical support.

And on the subject of your speeds, underground cable, per se, has nothing to do with speed. What matters is the effective wire length to your central office. Effective wire length can be affected by thin-gauge wire, corroded splices, extra legs of wiring branching off to the side, and other impairments. If your length is beyond 12,000' your speeds will be set lower. The stuff about a second line is about the possibility that a new phone number will be assigned a different cable pair that is shorter or in better condition, making the higher speed possible. They won't change your current number to a different cable unless the cable fails and you lose your voice service. Crappy DSL speed is not a valid condition for a cable change.

hope this helps

I still have that modem.. Works fine... I don't ever real options speed ever given to me. My underground line is new to the green panel at the end of the street. One of my neighbors cut cut the old one in 1/2 about a year ago planting a garden. AS for distance to the C0 Its maybe a mile at best. Maybe the lines to the panel are very old .Granted i also don't know what path they go underground I have the BBB looking in to it now. I am tired of going round and round on the phone with Verizon. I just want a clear reason as to why i am charged 39.99 for What the bill says is Enhanced Verizon Online DSL (B) Yet my same DSL user name and PW works on the dial up network. Could they have upped my speeds and the old modem will not support any thing over 768kbs?

Just to add in 2 pennies: I'm really curious to know just how accurate that online qualifier really is. Here's why: I was messing w/ it about two weeks ago. Went around the neighborhood and collected a bunch of payphone numbers. I popped in each one and they ALL qualify for DSL service according to the site! Just thought that that was a riot!

The online prequalification "tool" is driven by Verizon's inventory database of line lengths. When a number is initially installed, its line length is noted in their master database. For DSL prequals, if the servicing central office has DSL equipment AND the line length in the database is less than 18,000 ft., the website returns a positive result for DSL availability. Then you read the fine print. It says the prequal is only an estimate, and you'll find out the truth only if you actually order. Those pay phones apparently are close enough to an equipped central office, hence the result you saw.

DW: I see what you're saying. The original batch I tried were all Verizon phones -- most out on street corners. It stated that business DSL was available for them. I just tried a few COCOTs & got the same results. Now it would be funny to theorize what might happen if one tried to place an order on one of those!

and this has what to do with Verizons business plan? Do you ask for a discount from the DMV also?

Why the heck would a 768K plan be so darn expensive??? I'm currently paying $20 for 3 megs, and only $30 after the promo year (if I dont bolt), so someone please enlighten me of why Verizon is charging Dei2 so much? Are some area so strapped for DSl or ISPs that Verizon will gouge their customers?????????

I'm not far from him, and can't understand it one bit. I wouldn't have let it go on for so long, however.

Well my contract was up so I signed up for cable again and called to cancel. They said that I could get 14.99 if I sign up for another year contract. But too late, signed up for cable already. I thought it would go to 21.99 after a year, lady said if I signed another contract it would be 14.99.

Well I am back from from vacation and have some fallow at to this week of hell with Verizon.
The stand is don't like the price drop us. I have filed the paper work with the BBB. The State of NJ does not consider Broad band a regulated utility.. So calling the utility commission did nothing. Now for the fun part. Verizon has been all over my street this week on ever big green panel they have. Nothing is better then it was. I have called Verizon every day this week about slow downs and PPOE drop outs from 2 pm to 12 am its bad. After those times everything runs fine. Their new stand is we don't grantee speed or connections. If your connected everything is fine. Speed and latency does not matter to us. I am talking to comcast now to work out a price for an underground cable install
