Telephoen Customer Interface Device

Ok, basically, my home has the older style phone box; the phone line comes into two terminals, then proceeds into your home. However, there is now the CID which allows you to carry on testing to see if there's a problem with your phone lines, or not.

I have heard that if you request a CID for your home (an upgrade from the original box) that your telco must install and replace the old one with the CID free of charge. Is this correct? If so, may I have the law and states it is so?

It might help to know what city/state you live in and your local telco company.

Is this regarding a dispute or just curious?

New installations have required a Network Interface Device (NID), not sure what a CID is, since mid 1980 as a result of FCC divestiture in US.

How hard it will be to get one depends on the local Telco. Costs a lot to send out a dude/dudette in a truck to upgrade the installation.

1) Are you having phone problems?
2) Are you trying to add additional phone jacks?
3) Have previous modification removed/damaged the old style lightning protector (carbon block) creating an unsafe situation?

You have a much better chance getting a NID installed. If they will not you can always install your own test jack if you are comfortable with electrical wiring.

Here is a good source for Telephone stuff:

There was an interesting thread along similar lines in the Verizon DSL forum:

that's what I mean, TSchmidt; a NID, not a CID...sorry about that.

Anyway, my local phone provider is Embarq.

1. No
2. no
3. no

Basically I would like to require my telephone lines to cat 5 this summer, and thought it would be a good idea to go ahead and upgrade the phone box to a NID.

If your NID is older connection box, it should just take one call to 611 to request a new NID box. Typically, the telephone company will upgrade these upon a service call to the home. In my case, I reported static on the line. The came out and the *first* thing they did was upgrade the NID.

Sounds to me you haven't had any service calls in years. To lessen future troubles, they should gladly upgrade your NID.

nope; I've never had any phone problems, except ONCE.

there was an extremely bad ice storm that went through (our area was declared a state of emergency). I lost phone service for about 2-3 days. I knew it had to do with the ice storm, so I didn't bother calling.

Besides that, there have never been any problems (and since they upgraded the Remote Terminal that I pull from and backed it by fiber....well, definitely no problems).

I might just wait until DSL becomes available; a tech told me that they'd upgrade it for free, if I ordered DSL.
