| [Equipment] SPA-2002 Question
I just purchased an unlocked SPA-2002 that should arrive in a few days. Although I'm a reasonably satisfied Vonage customer with a locked PAP-2, I wanted to have a backup device to a) try out some of the other VOIP providers, and b) be able to quickly switch over to an alternate provider if Vonage has to shutdown in a couple of months.
So far, so good. From reading the thousands of posts here and there, I gather that Vonage encrypts the provisioning file and does not allow you to use non-locked adapters with their service. Is that correct?
The seller asserts that this is new, unlocked SPA 2002, but I've seen at least one post that suggests that all 2002s are affiliated with a VOIP company. True? If so, how do I keep my 2002 unlocked?
Thanks! |

1 edit | Vonage doesn't release your credentials to use on your own device, except for an additional monthly fee they allow a "softphone". I've read that users are able to use a Sipura ata in lieu of a softphone.
I believe you can stop any provider from "provisioning" your ata by setting Provision Enable: NO on the Provisioning tab. When set to NO, any parameter changes must be made manually or by a manual reset. You can place passwords on your adapter for additional security.
If the adapter was previously locked to a provider there are some unlocking schemes that will revert to a locked status when a manual reset to factory defaults is issued. |

As travelguy said, if it was provisioned before - just select NO for auto-provision and erase any provider information in the same screen. If you cannot select no, erasing the info is good enough. |
