| Upload PowerBoost! - See Where It's At
I thougnt a new thread could be in order and possibly sticky'd for member TRACKING of NEW Market Launches of Upload PowerBoost.
If after doing a power cycle and you are on the 6000/384 tier and start seeing ~1000 uploads, you got the boost. If on the 8000/768 (performance plus) tier and are now seeing ~2000 upload, you got the boost!
Reading the Chicago thread we know it's in Chicago and some surrounding burbs. Parts of KY and VA have reported launches as well.
It has been reported that all markets should have the boosted upload by end of May 07.
Please include your details below:

I can confirm that it is present in Clinton Twp (also SE Michigan).
There goes my m0n0wall traffic shaping
I'll probably get over the "gee, whiz, I can upload 10MB at 300Kb/sec" soon enough and turn traffic shaping back on. We're still really at 768kbps up. |

I know exactly where you're coming from. The downstream power boost wreaked havoc on my pf+altq setup. The upstream power boost would almost certainly be more of a PITA. I'm kind of glad that the business account I'm on now doesn't have power boost either way I'll take consistency with the ability to effectively traffic shape. -- "Hey honey! | reply to jasqid Good idea. You may have to hit the Hey Mods button to get it stickied for you though.
I too am wondering about traffic shaping. I'm using pfsense which was forked from m0n0wall...because I wanted a HDD install.
I turn off traffic shaping every so often to see if we have upload PB or not yet. Not yet.
I'll post when the Atlanta market gets it. |

| The power boost thing just doesn't seem like that big of a bonus, in my opinion. It's going to make your speed tests look artificially fast, sure. But in reality it's not that big a deal for a long download, or upload.
I think it's just a gimmick so people run a speed test and give the artificial impression that they have 16M/1M or something, when they don't. -- "Hey honey! Do you think KFC's still open?" |

| I don't know... Long before Comcast even rumored about PowerBoost, I was getting some wild bursting!
At one point, I downloaded an MP3 instantly! No sustained speed for any length of time, just that sudden blast of speed at first. A burst.
Having ~30mbps PowerBoost for 40-50MB is fine! Many of the files I download are at or less than 50-MB, so getting them at 3-3.5MB/sec is ok with me! The bigger files, even though only ~50MB come in at insane speeds, it does make the file download faster.
I'll gladly accept *ANY* free speed increase. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

fiberguy My views are my own. Premium join:2005-05-20 | reply to gordo I haven't heard much about PB for the top speed tiers. I believe this is for the 8 and 6 mb customers only. You've pretty much already have speed boost in the form of permaboost. |

| reply to deblin Mind jumping off that old tired argument already?
Yes, speed tests look better BECAUSE THE SPEEDS ARE THERE!
If you know who to really test speed, you'd know that speed boost does work. When you got DL SB, test a file down look.. other than the lame argument of "it makes speed tests look better" crap, it really does give you a faster download. The same will be for upload.

| reply to fiberguy said by fiberguy :Can you stop spreading lies and bs? How is it lies and bs? My intent is not to irritate people, especially those who somehow take this personally. All I'm doing is making an observation based on facts. Allow me to substantiate what I said.
Let's suppose you are downloading a 700MB file (be it a linux distro or a movie if you're into downloading that sort of thing).
Let's further suppose you are on the 8M plan, and you get a speed boost of 16M for the first 30MB.
A connection with a constant 8M would mean you'd download it in:
700/1/60 = 11.67 minutes
Compare to a connection with speed boost:
(30/2/60) + (670/1/60) = .25 + 11.17 = 11.42 minutes.
You're talking a difference of .25 minutes (15 seconds) for a 700MB file.
Obviously the time saved increases as the file size shrinks, and I'm not arguing that isn't useful. I just don't think it's much more than a gimmick. I'd say that it's more useful for browsing provided the browser is configured to download portions of a web page in parallel, and of course that the web server can push that many simultaneous connections and max out your speed boost. -- "Hey honey!
