| I have yet to see a single Cable MSO say "FiOS will end us." Until then, I'm thinking Mr. Brian Roberts knows what he's talking about. Sure, FiOS technology is faster now, but we're talking about what the provider is willing to push to the public for their $$$.. At the moment, FiOS offers a 5/30 pkg that isn't even available in all markets. Why? Because they don't want to push it unless they have to, nor do they want to over invest into the product up-front so they investors don't freak out...

No sane CEO is going to get up in front of any group of financial analysts (or any news media) and say "Gee, I think we have a crappy product. We torture our customers with laughable customer service and we cancel the accounts of the people who are most likely to pay the most for the product. Then, we blame outages on the competition and seed internet forums with employees who attack anyone who dares to point these things out."
No, a CEO is going to paint everything as sunshine and roses, and mock the competition. It helps cut down on that pesky critical thinking by the media.

The only larger provider is AOL's dialup. Thats strange you say they want slower DSL...

As has been reported DSL has been gaining ground and the lower price point seems to be the reason.
What would be interesting is, given people who have the option between the two, how many people grab which service.
Losing out may not be the best word choice, maybe starting to lose ground.

Yeah, for now, thanks to time and takeovers. Let's see where they are a few years from now in those ever-growing FiOS areas.
In my area: Comcast HSI (6000/384) for about $70 (no fees), Verizon DSL (3000/768) for $32.50 (including fees), and FiOS (30/5 for me) for $55 (no fees). My "preference ranking": FiOS first, DSL second, Comcast third (even with PowerBoost).
To each his/her own.

Yeah im sure Comcast does think its really funny, Im stuck with comcast and cant get DSL, I called in to see why my internet bill keeps rising, im told only the highest speed tier is avl to me. Everything in life is getting cheaper it seems, except comcast cable and television services.

Id have them come shut it off, but i fear i might be murdered, my house might be destroyed in an explosion or they might fall asleep on my new Chase loungers i just got.

Comcast is the "largest ISP for broadband service" because they have the largest footprint. That has nothing to do with providing a quality product, competitive pricing or customers' warm fuzzy feelings when they get their bills every month.
For better or worse, once ATT finishes devouring BellSouth, it will be the "largest ISP for broadband service", which I also expect you to praise as being the best because it's the biggest.

| Comcast has two tiers, a 6Mbps/384Kbps tier for $42.95 and a 8Mbps/758Kbps tier for $52.95, both without the $3 modem rental charge and both require tv service. That is the pricing tiers for the same state you live in, they do not vary from area to area.
If you don't want to pay almost $60 a month, then drop down the the 6Mbps tier. |

| Either try again, or get on over to the cancellation people (retention) and tell them your issue. I'm sure they can "find" a way to get you a lower price. See if they can get you on the $33 per service package, where you could get internet(6Mbps) for $33 a month and tv service for $33 a month. They also have another promo right now with digital plus and HBO for $39.99 a month for 12 months. |

First of all, Comcast High Speed Internet is $42.95 + $3.00 if you choose to rent the modem, but ONLY IF you have cable TV. They offer a "speed tier" for $10 more a month. On the $42.95 price, 5 years ago it was 1.5 meg down, 128 kbps up, no "speed tier" option, 4 years ago, it was 4 meg down, 256 kbps up, no "speed tier" option, 3 years ago it was 6 megs down, 384 kbps up, no "speed tier" option, then 2 years ago, it was the same, with "speed tier" option of 8 meg down, 768 kbps up. Now it's advertised as 6 meg down, but with powerboost, I average 9 meg down, and 384 kbps up, for standard speed, "speed tier" is advertised as 8 meg down, but I know with powerboost it averages 12 to 16 meg down, and 768 kbps up. Comcast is the first ISP to offer powerboost technology, to give customers better value IMO. I honestly think fiber is a great thing, but I also think that current prices to service, maintain, repair, install, and deploy fiber is too expensive to deploy everywhere. For years, cable has been way ahead of the game with speed on the internet, and television service that is ACTUALLY BROADCASTED by the owner, not 3rd party, like dish. Until fiber cost comes down, it's worth it more to simply invest in more ways to milk your equipment. With switched digital video coming, and DOCSIS 3.0, it won't be hard for cable to compete without having to deploy fiber. You all keep forgetting that the only reason fiber is being laid by the telco is because they can't expand copper enough to handle the practical applications for today. Cable still can, and they will, and when they day comes to goto fiber, they can do that too, and they can do it with ease, as they already have fiber to the neighborhood near you. Multiplexing that fiber and splicing it into a fiber node instead of a HFC would allow the same service. It's just not "necessary", because the internet, as it stands in America, just can't handle EVERYBODY that has broadband, to be able to cruse the web at anywhere near the 50 meg tier Verizon offers. Sure you will find some here and there, but consistently, for now, not everyone can hang. Imaging your connection if everyone had it... Anyway, argue all you want, I agree with Mr. Roberts, only on the premise that cable has been able to accomplish amazing feats in the past, so as current trend will show, they feel confident they can do it again, so I believe them.
