With the price of copper this is an issue. People can laugh about it all they want however this is a real issue. People are ripping cable down. You would be surprised how much money can be made by recycling scrap copper. |

I just took a pickup truck load of steel down to the scrap yard and got 65$ for it..
I pick up old water heaters, dryers, stoves, and anything made of metal, once a month I`ll take em down to the scrap yard and get some extra spending cash.. I mainly drive around my area on garbage day and see what metals are available.. suprising how many people throw out large chunks of metal, even in a small 40-50 home area.. (start playing the sanford & son muzak now lol)
and no, I dont rip down cables lol, but the assmunch's can take my copper, i`m on fios woot!

Yeah, I'm wondering what someone thinks can be gotten from stealing copper cable. What goes from pole to pole for telephone service should be a little better grade than what goes to the house, but it doesn't appear to be much better than what I use for radio equipment.
Yeah, I use balanced and unbalanced line. The most expensive stuff is probably the unbalanced RG8U. And even that is just a little over a $1 a foot for decent quality cable. *No one looking for good quality cable is going to buy stuff off the street at top price.*
20 feet just isn't very much. Most of my cable runs are about 100 feet long. So I just am not seeing where the real value is for 20 feet of telephone cable. (Still trying to find out exactly what does go from pole to pole.)

| The article says 600 lines so that most likely equates to 1200 wires.
A 20 foot hunk of 600 pair cable does have some weight to it.
I don't think they are talking about the 2 or 4 pairs that run to your home  |

This is what the article says:
"The most recent incident occurred in the Weirton area, where a 20-foot section of Verizon cable that housed 600 telephone lines was stolen on Jan. 27, affecting not only residential customers, but police and fire departments in Colliers as well."
It looks like a problem from the article itself, doesn't it. The article does a bit better job explaining what was stolen.
Someone has an idea what that cable is worth I suppose.

Living here in WV, I can tell you that in our little town several people have been charged with copper theft. It appears though most of the crimes have been at mines. I'm guessing that at the mine entrance copper is just laying around to the point that people think they can steal enough quickly to make a few bucks. Apparently, the price for aluminum is also not too bad. There was a local (San Francisco Bay area) TV news item recently where aluminum guard rails along bridges and such are being ripped out and sold. The highway department advised people that they don't do guard rail maintenance at night, so if they see any late-night "maintenance" being done, they should call the police. |

I dropped almost $100 for 120 feet of copper coax for a 70cm/440mhz installation for my UHF AR Yagi. I needed 150 feet of coax for my new HF vertical, but I got away with using rg-8x, that is pretty cheap, about 0.30/ft. The higher the frequency, the higher the loss, so I guess it is money well spent...

For the radio I think it's been worth it to purchase decent cable. Several of my cables have come from here:

Good stuff there. (Do I want to mention that some 15 year old crapo RG8U from Radio Shack is still working just fine out in the weather? It's not giving me an excuse to replace it.)
