cubsfan : Making any limitations clear seems fair to me, too. Believe it or not, a lot of people who are hogging bandwidth have no idea they're doing it. They either don't understand the internet at all or don't know that their file sharing programs are also uploading material from them. As far as I'm concerned, a netequalizer type solution might not be a bad idea on a larger scale. Let people know that their music/movie/tvshow downloads will receive lower priority when the network is congested. In many cases, this will bring the issue to their attention for the first time and probably motivate them to be more conscious.

Comcast has no problem taking your money, if you are willing to pay it, even when service doesn't work.

Here is a story that will make you laugh your as off. Dec 14th we had one of the worst wind and rain storms ever in washington sate seattle area. over 1,000,000 people without power, cable, and phone. we were not allowed to go fix cable lines until power put theres up first. we sent out a press release saying all installs and disconnects were put on hold until every comcast customer was restored. So a lady calls in and says, my cable and power is down a tree fell on my roof and knockedthe cables down. we told her we could not come fix her cable line till her power lines were fixed. she understood. well she was unaware and the comcast employee did not tell her she was over due on her bill. well when an account hits 82 days past due you are interupted in service. if it goes 92 days you are diconnected from the pole. well on the 16th r 17th of dec she became 92 days. and all those techs that were supposed to be restoring services, one of them didn't get the memo the sent a tech out to disconnect her even though she had no service any way and still no electricity. alot of people were without both for 2 weeks. so he went out the lady saw him climbing the pole and said, you should stay away from there they haven't fixed my power yet. the guy told the lady to mind her business he is going to shut her cable off as he was ordered to. He hooked or bumped something caused a power surge to go into the ladys house it blew up her microwave, and caught her refridgerator on fire and he got zapped! All over comcast greed. If they had been doing what they told the press they were doing restoring outages with every available man this would not have happened.

so anyway, I am not sure what the band limit is but I also know that their "unlimited Long Distance" is not unlimited either. I work in collections and we were calling people all the time telling them to lower usage or we would have to charge them business rates? It just doesn't make sense. If they cal another country if they get say 150.00 in long distance say in a 2 week period they shut them off till they pay it b4 they turn long distance back on. no matter how long customer is with us.

MY guess is that you are employed by providers like Comcast and that's why you take on the gang-up and bully approach to people like me.

Let me remind YOU that I was LIED to by Comcast, Alright? They advertised their service as Unlimited. I don't care what you have to say. They advertised it and that's it. That is why I got it. I NEVER had a problem with Cox Communications that is when I lived in RI. When I got promoted to my new job in Massachusetts, I shopped around and the two choices were Comcast and Verizon. I called up Comcast first and I questioned the Rep and asked about any bandwidth caps Or limits and I clearly stated to the rep that I heard about this and she again told me that there are NO LIMITS on the connection. And 7 months later, I get a phone call from an 857 area code from a Comcast abuse department rep threatening me to limit my downloads other wise I'd be cut off for a year. He wouldn't tell me WHAT those limits are AND went further (and all this time he was very rude and condescending towards me) in lying telling me that there are no limits. I then said to him I'd be wiling to pay for more bandwidth and a higher service which I later found out that it wouldn't make any difference whatsoever. I called back the Comcast office and I told them of this rude rep and I did not appreciate getting threatened like this ESPECIALLY since I am a PAYING customer. Fine that the service has limits, WHAT ARE THEY?
Let me explain something to all of you high and mighty Comcast-loving employees who bully anybody for speaking out against any monopoly that rips off people and what they advertise is never what they deliver: All it takes is one guy to speak out, spread the word and it spreads like wildfire.
Now why is it that an ISP like Cox and better yet Verizon can control the traffic and do it well but Comcast on the other hand can't and won't, would rather take this cheap bully type tactic? If it's true that they have made record profits, then why aren't they adding the technologies to better control the traffic on the network? The technology is available. I should know, I'm heading into the IT tech field.
Just to let you also know, Comcast can't provide good phone service either. They actually call people up threatening to cut their service if they don't "limit" their phone use either. I got this info from the inside from a Comcast employee.

I am not looking nor want your pity or sympathy, I'm here to warn people. And all of you high and holier-than-thow Comcast supporters you should warn people and tell them the truth that providers like Comcast have a limited service, and in many cases their network can't handle people that use the internet a lot. It is your responsibilty and duty instead of bullying and throwing stones at guys like me.

What happened was was hosting a 1 gig beta client download for a game and 2 40 meg updates heh. That month 3 games I was beta testing. It also was not a public server as the beta test was a closed non public beta/alpha. The ONLY thing that I personally see as a solution is to throttle their speeds back to what most residential people really need to average use.. a 512k or 768K line for the remainder of the month. Throttling the users account would be, in my opinion, fair!

With throttling, they can't clog the node any more, yet they can still run full open without affecting the node, and still, websites, email, mp3 downloads, are generally not affected. Advertising and Terms of services are two different things. An advertisement is meant to attract the consumer.. the TOS is what you are selling. People want to confuse the ad with the contract.. Rent a U-Haul truck based on the ad alone and not read what you are agreeing to. Down the road when you have a problem, you and your attorney can work together to minimize your damages.
fiberguy : There are cases where nodes can't handle it and they are addressed.. admittedly, not always as fast as people would want.. but that problem exists in all industries. People want instant gratification - an unreasonable expectation.

But, people like you also have a problem.. a very common problem. Though the market place allows people to voice their desires with the pocket books, the problem is that some people get it backwards. You are buying a service at the companies terms. It's not a socialist issue. We do not have a right to TELL them what to do. We have a right to voice our desires and exercise the right to NOT use the service.. but this notion that we have the right to dictate a companies' business practice is absurd. This is a common misconception here on BBR. You have choices... to use, or not to use. What you don't have is the right to set and order satisfaction, faster speeds, customer rights, or performance other than what is being sold.

NO wire or wireless system is perfect. This is not to say that they don't have an obligation to move on issues, but the unreasonable expectations that people expect is a joke. If a node has a sudden surge in use, you can't expect that it will get corrected in 4 hours or the day, even the next week! Cell towers over load from time to time but they don't , and they shouldn't, jump on it just because. That tower may not be over loaded tomorrow. The node that is over loaded may in fact be over loaded because you have someone or some people pushing their modems to the max which is clearly not considered typical residential use. The day it becomes TYPICAL is when everyone is doing it. THEN it's typical!

As to your driving and speed limits.. we also have minimum and maximum speeds.. and in some areas they expect slower drivers to the right in order to keep their roads flowing smoothly.. some traffic needs to go faster while other traffic doesn't.
openbox9 : I think a lot fewer people would have problems with the limited "unlimited" service if ISPs openly advertised their caps and explained their processes for throttling. The unscrupulous act of allowing customers to believe the facade of unlimited <STRIKE>access</STRIKE> data transfer and then smacking them down with caps and/or throttling tends to leave really bad tastes in consumers' mouths. Personally, I'm all for a 100/100 connection to the Internet if I know that I can download whatever and however much as I want up to a predefined and advertised cap (e.g. 50GB/mth, 100GB/mth, etc.). If I go over the cap, throttle me, disconnect me, or charge me more as long as I know in advance. Hell, bill me at the 95th percentile that most ISPs themselves are billed at.

If we were using a closer analogy, they would throttle your connection speed down as you neared the limit. Nobody is stopping your ability to download/upload content. They are simply reducing your ability to do so by creating a virtual "speed limit".

Perhaps a poor analogy, but I will try anyway. You buy a german sports car. The car itself has an electronic limiter preventing you from going over 130 mph even though if the limiter is removed you can go 150mph. Nobody complains about that. Similarly, the whole speed limit thing. Posted speed limit is 55mph around me, yet people go 70 and don't get pulled over. Some people choose to push their limits and go 80 and they DO get pulled over. Internet companies are really no different, they don't say "you can download 30 gigs a month...and we'll really let you slide at 40..but once you hit 50 we shut off your internet" they say you have unlimited access (which is true) and they try to throttle people who are significantly out of the bell curve.
--
Stupidity, like hydrogen, is one of the basic building blocks of the Universe.

Gallery * Life * Work
