NoSynch : Okay so I am with Aliant Dsl , comtrend ct301 modem. I come home late last night and I can't connect, connection timing out when I am logged into my smc router and clicking "connect". Lights all good on front,(pwr, dsl, lan) So i do the ole power cycle modem and hope for the best, nothing. To get more info about the problem, I plan on creating a direct connection to the modem and configuring a pppoe connection in win xp to see which ppp error it will give me. However, when connecting my ether cable from the modem to the pc, the lan light will not lit....hmmm I check my physical setup to make sure I have the right cable and it is secure (yup all good).

so i begin quick cursory test for process of elimination.

1. direct to modem from pc (no lan light on modem)

2. pc to router (lan lit on router) router to modem (lan lit on modem, wan lit on router) but times out when connecting.

3. linuxbox to router (lan lit on router) router to modem (lan lit on modem, wan lit on router) but times out when connecting.

4. linuxbox direct to modem , configured pppoeconf (lan lit on modem , ABLE TO CONNECT AND BROWSE)

wtf?? as a footnote.. i go sit and watch tv for 10 mins come back and connect my pc and linux box back into router, reconfigure network settings and able to browse again on both boxes (weird)
