Re: big deal

heh, you know, 100 gbps is nothing compared to transatlantic fibers..

Take a look for example at this network, Its a middle east fiber network:

Each fiber pair is DWDM, 64xOC192, resulting in 64 x 10/10(OC192's speed) Gbps = 640/640 Gbps per fiber pair!

And they have 6 pairs, so think of each pair as 640/640!
You get a combined speed of 640/640 * 6 = 3840/3840 Gbps = 3.84/3.84 Tbps!

Impressive, isn't it? even most fiber networks aren't fast as this one.

A little addition to this post:
64xOC192 is indeed impressive, per fiber pair, but isn't close to what technology has to offer. DWDM systems of 128-160 wavelengths are dropping in prices. and OC192 is just 10/10 Gbps.

If money wasn't an issue in this world.. We could have 160xOC768, which is 160 x 40/40 Gbps(OC768 speed) = 6400 Gbps = 6.4/6.4 Tbps per fiber pair!

Now, if we had 6 fiber pairs, that would be 6 * 6.4/6.4 Tbps = 38.4/38.4 Tbps total bandwidth!

kudos:1

after i posted that i went to do some work and started thinking about that. Very impresssive is more the word what they have done over there.

Thanks for the info on fiber i didnt know they had got it that fast yet.

thanks for the heads up

NLR also uses DWDM technology that allows for up to 40 10 gigabit lambdas per fiber pair.

One of the things that makes this interesting is exactly the point you raised -- this is Ethernet, not SONET.

Interesting.. i googled NLR.. interesting powerful network.

Anyway, It seems like ethernet is becoming the future.. Its so much cheaper than SONET\ATM, Although lacks some goodies of SONET\ATM, such as QoS, The price makes ethernet a very attractive option.
