Ok, things are getting confused here in this thread, lets try and clear it all up.

The xbl.spamhaus.org zone is the CBL. Trojaned/compromised machines list.

The sbl.spamhaus.org zone is the 'known spammers/rosko' list.

The sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org zone is the combination of the two above.

And yes, at your size you will have to pay, as you said. Even to use just the SBL. And yes, it is 11 grand.

You can hit CBL direct and get the trojaned machine list for free. But unless I am totally wrong, the sbl.spamhaus.org zone is not from another source, it is made and operated by Spamhaus.

And I am pretty sure of that, since I know some of the folks that work for Spamhaus, and I feed them spam on Rosko spammers ;)

We use the CBL. I rsync it every hour and update the mail cluster. When I get to understand my DNS program, I will maintain my own blacklist, and whitelist. And a list which only allows connections from specified MTAs would, in fact, be a whitelist.

No, it would be a whitelist. Block all of comcast's IP space.
