BILLUM : what about latency with dsl? Does that all depend on how far away from the CO you are? I live in peoria il and we have only had cable for about a month...so far it is decent "speeds" (about 3000/350) but my latency is horrible. Pinging yahoo at around 50 for the first few packets...then shoots from 50 - 100 back to 50 then to 200...stuff like that. As a downloader first I like the speed, but for gaming that is nuts. I have had techs out and they were very smart for the most part...but I don't think the problem is local, sounds like routing to the RDC to me.

Beetle_B : Well, I hate contracts.

And it's not $30 cheaper if you don't have a phone line.

Last time I checked, SBC offered a relatively cheap line ($12/mo + taxes) if all I wanted was DSL. Say $15/mo + $15/mo = $30/mo (including taxes). Only $15 cheaper than Insight, and a third of the speed.

All this notwithstanding, I may try it. I had the same DSL deal for a whole year (was more expensive then), and while its considerably slower, it was rock solid. I've now had Insight BB for almost a year, and its reliability pales in comparison. No down times, technically, but sometimes it gets slow and stays that way for a day or two. Then their fluctuations in ping times cause me woes with my VoIP service. I recently visited my brother who uses SBC DSL, and took my VoIP adapter there. I could CLEARLY tell the difference in quality.

I hate contracts. However, I'm a poor student. I'm using Insight only because I have a roommate and he insists on the higher speeds. But he may leave town after a few months, and I may be stuck alone to pay the full rent, bills, etc. If that happens, I probably won't think twice of switching to the "$15" DSL deal. I'll do the full battery of tests during the 30 days, and if there are no major complaints, will just keep it.

homergreg : I jumped after seeing the $14.95 deal. I was concerned that my modem was synching at 384k, even after 2 weeks when the "ramp up" of the service was supposed to make it better. I called SBC and the tech support said 384k was all I was going to get for the package setup I had, and passed me off to sales for a better service package and sales told me I was too far from the CO for a better package. I posted my story and data from my modem at the SBC Funhouse forum here, and they directed me to the SBC tech forum here at Broadbandreports, and lo and behold, the techs here had me at 1.5 Mbits in minutes! So yes the SBC call in techs do things to deserve their rep, but the ones that work the forums here know their stuff.

The $14.95 is for only a year, so I'm holding onto my cable modem and router, and hopefully a year from now, Insight will be feeling the pressure and offering something to get back some customers. $44.95 a month for service that I've had for 5 years is just too much . Insight's bottom line needs some stress from people leaving before they get competitive, so if SBC takes enough customers from cable, both Cable and DSL customers will win!

I ran both for a month, and found the DSL was faster browsing the web, but cable to have 512kbps faster on downloads. The big advantage to DSL was the upload. I've been running my server for years on Comcast and Insight with no problem, but I like it that SBC allows it. I don't have to worry about getting an abuse letter now.
darkadept : I never jumped from Insight to SBC, but I have used both on a regular basis. I signed my parents up with SBC several months ago, and they are really happy with the service. Their connection has been rock solid and they get consistent speeds with low pings. I haven't used the newsgroups via SBC (nor do I use them with insight) so I can't speak to that.

I've been happy with Insight the last year and a half that I've had their service. I've a few outages over the time, but nothing too serious, however, my speeds have been all over the board with them.

I would probably jump over to SBC if I could(to save money), but unfortunately, where my house is built I'm too far from the CO and RT. Good news is, that it's a brand new community, so if/when their fiber services are offered, I'll probably be able to get their service quicker.

reverendmoon : Has anyone jumped from InsightBB to the $15/month SBC DSL Express package? It offers 384k-1.5M down and 128k-384k up. this is significantly slower than my present 3.0M down and 256k up. However, it's 45-15= $30 cheaper !

I confirmed I can upgrade to the DSL pro package with it's 1.5M-3.0M up and 384k -512k without a penalty. It's $25/month. Still $20 cheaper.

This looks like an option for me, but I'd like any feedback from someone who's jumped. It's a year commitment. I'd hate to end up unhappy. The net is TOO important to me.

I'm a heavy websurfer and even heavier newsgroup user.

TIA
