You'll just have to try Pioneer codes from the TV/VCR and DVD areas to see if one works on your receiver. On a side note, I went to the Motorola site and used their contact form to submit a troubleshooting report about the CC setup on the 6412 suggesting that they add the ability to toggle the CC on/off via the remote in a future firmware update. Back to the point, The analog channels are better, but not great. Though that issue is mostly my TV I think since I knew when I bought it, it was not the best at analog display, so that is not a factor for me. I had one issue for some reason the Closed captions were turned on rather than off by default, which is not how it is supposed to be. Would not have been a problem, except were you select that is not in the standard setup menu. To access it you have to have the box turned off and then hit menu on the box, then you get the other setup and can change that. I had played around in there on my last dvr, but had forgotten between then and now. My new DVR did not come with a manual, so I discovered it after using some google power. Unfortunately when I mentioned it to customer support he was not familiar with the problem, but to his credit he recommend I call back during the day and talk to a specific supervisor. I am not displease with the support since he did not blow me off and recommended a solution. To give him credit it is a newer device and there is a learning curve. I know many slam on customer support, but frankly in Bloomington, IN when I call the local number I get polite and good support as well as fairly quick truck rolls ( within a few days, unless I have no service then they offer next day)

I was also able to once again take my old box in and exchange it in office, I can;t understand why some Insight office let you do this and others do not. It's amazing the people who use coax and s-video cables for their HD because that's what they were given at the install. I've seen 2 other people in the same boat. Their HD looked really bad, come to find out they were trying to get an HD signal over an s-video cable.

You are right about having to kinda know what to do, but the people like me who are interested in things like this know more than the cable guys who come to install believe me.

My mom and dad have a hi-def tv and we had Insight come and hook the box up and they just used the regular cable to hook the tv up. When I called to order it for them I told them to bring component cables, well they didn't.

When I went to my parents house and saw that, I called them and they came and said that you didn't need component cables to receive Hi-def, I knew right then and their they knew nothing about hi-def. The hi-def channel were not hi-def and you couldn't even get the flip bar to work on the channel,(they said you don't have the flip bar on the hi-def channels lol) I told them to go ahead and hook up with component cables and what do ya know, we had actual hi-def with the info bar!! I also had to set up the box as far as aspect ratio and so on. They had not any idea about these boxes.

I have had to just teach myself all these things, which I really enjoy anyway, I have my tv hooked to my computer and hooked up my speaker system myself, it took me a long time to figure everything out but eventually I did just by reading online and having an interest in it.

But for my mom and dad forget it they have no idea, but what scares me is neither did the techs in their area,(Danville,IL) So, I know that when something changes for them I will have to come and help them with it. I am not sure as to what I have to do to become a credible source, but I am telling you that you can take your box to the office in Urbana and they will let you swap it out. I did it yesterday. It took all of 5 minutes. Also, all of that stuff you are talking about(programming the settings) anyone can do on their own. All you have to do is turn the power off and press the menu button and the settings screen pops up. I have no reason to lie about this, I don't get my jollies by having people go to the cable office for no reason. In fact there were two other people at the office doing the same thing as I was. They have a big cart behind the counter with alot of the dual tuner boxes waiting for you.
P.S. When I first called last week, they told me I couldn't come pick it up yet and they would give me a call when I could. However, dealing with cable companies in the past, I have learned that not too many of the people that work there know what the hell they are talking about. So, I called the next day hoping to get a different customer service rep and sure enough this one told that I could come in at any time and swap the boxes. They then have to make sure that DHCP grabs an IP address once the CO authorizes the MAC.

These are a series of operations which would probably really madden the average subscriber and probably some above-average subscribers as well.

I don't know what they are talking about. There is nothing special that needs to be done. You don't even need to put two wires into the back of the box like you do on Direct TV. You only need one. Just follow these instructions.

Q: How do I get 30 second skip in iGuide?

1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button
5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second skip).
6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip function to.

That is all you have to do. I used the "favorite" button because I never use that one. It is not quite as good as the 30 second skip on the dish network but it is still pretty nice to have. Those that have had dish in the past will know what I am talking about. The 30 second skip on the 6412 has a slight delay when using it. You will understand what I am saying after you use it. Call the cable company and try to swap remotes. I have the new remote - but no new DVR box yet. Looks as if I should call today and see if they have released the new boxes in this area yet. Even though we called - no one ever stated they would take our number and call us back when they started to release the new units to the general public. She was extremely upfront - nice and didn't stone wall me. This was rather refreshing. Now give me my new box!!:D

Heck she even asked if there was anything I wanted to know about the new unit. Which to me made it seem she would actually pay attention at the meeting her supervisor is sending her to at this moment. I think maybe I dialed the wrong number or something today. Couldn't have been Insight I called.:D

The employees name was Renee. But she didn't tell me if I could pick the box up in her message. Urrgghh!! Guess that means I'm going to have to schedule an appointment. Pointless I tell you. It can never be simple. A - yes you can come swap the box sir - would be nice - just once.:)

Yes sir you are correct, like I said I am sorry to see that many of you are sorts screwed by this. It is unfortunate that the DVI was a short lived standard for HD. Fortunately the only real difference is that HDMI also has the audio signal bundled in the cable, so you are not screwed. Copy protection is no different between the two as far as I known. That it did, and it was seriously annoying when the firmware didn't support it fully yet. Turning off your TV while the DVR was still on resulted in being locked out until you disconnected the cable and powered it back on. There was a thread or two about it.

1) DVI and HDMI are interchangeable, you can get a cable with one HDMI end and 1 DVI. Just because your TV doesnt have HDMI, its not obsolete, as long as it supports HDCP its just as useful as HDMI, most HDMI implementations dont even use the audio capabilities of this new connector.

2) DVI and HDMI use the SAME copy protection, its called HDCP. The two aren't related. The copy protection applied in HDMI is similar to the protection in DVI, it keeps "unauthorized" devices from being able to record the signal. The Broadcast Flag is supposed to keep people from recording specific programs at all, regardless of device used, and sadly regardless of fair use clauses in copyright law. Fortunately we don't have that to deal with yet.

I am sorry for those who have DVI on there TV's, atleast there are adapters, I am thrilled to hear it is HDMI, my new Tosh has 2 and this will fill them up. Too bad they don't put both a HDMI and a DVI out on them.

I was disappointed to see no DVI as well. My Mitsubishi only has DVI. Fortunately, the installer gave me a DVI(m)/HDMI(m) cable for free. It's not very sturdy gauge, but it'll do for now.

I mentioned to him that people might be upset to find out that they're without DVI for DVI only sets and he recommended that people call the Insight office and ask for a DVI/HDMI cable. He said that they stock them.

when you push the swap button, what happens? before i got mine working correctly, the guide came up on the bottom saying it was on channel one, but the picture was paused on channel 13...so, what i did (totally hit and miss on my part) was, while the channel guide said one, i used the channel "+-" buttons to change the channel, then hit the swap button again, and the dual tuners were working...

That's exactly the reason I opted for an install (which was moved to tomorrow), rather than a pick-up and install myself. I did that the first time around and it had all kinds of trouble getting itself on the network.

He then apologized for his mistake, in which I said no worries, thanks for calling ME BACK! he put me through to sales department and we went from there. Will be getting the 6214 tomorrow afternoon when they come to and replace my old dvr that crapped out.

I will give David and the Sales guy props for takeing the time to figure it out and inform me. The sales guy was just as helpfull as he didnt even know about it and I asked to please check and he did and in fact learned about it as well. Seems they are slow to telling these guys and gals that they did in fact roll them out. Anyways props to those guys for being so helpfull and taking the time to care about me the customer!

Hopefully that was a bad choice of words.:) Renting them would hopefully be what was meant. As for getting to beta test the new unit. That is cool for you. It'd be nice if most Insight areas would have a few non employee beta testers. But for as many years as I've been saying this. I've yet to hear of any non employee's getting to test new technology being considered for deployment.

I'm hoping to find out this week if my local office has any of the new devices in stock. From the sound of things the new DVR box would be something new and fun to play with.

I'm not wanting to go "Google it" at the moment. What is the hard drive capacity with this newer model? Hopefully increased from the previous unit. My household always maxes out the current DVR box easily most weeks.
