It's drawing from an index that is constantly updated. So, when you start to type "p" it's not using a lot of resources or anything to start its search before you get to the next letter and it can narrow its results.

From what I saw, the reason why Launchbar is faster than Spotlight is because ...

1. Spotlight looks through ever type of file, document, and apps. For instance if you were looking for the word "porn", it'll search your entire computer for the one word and show where and what type of file that word is mention. Now that's something Launchbar won't do.

2. This the one that actually bugs me, so if I get flamed, whatever. As soon as you start typing it starts it's search. For instance when I type the letter "p" for porn, it'll search the entire computer for anything that matches "p" and so on as I start typing the rest of the word out.

I don't think Launchbar has that type of power search like Spotlight. The nice thing is that LaunchBar is highly intuitive and will list items in a very smart way according to how you use your computer. I don't know whether Spotlight can do this as well as LaunchBar.
