pistachio : Around 5 am this morning (Wed.), I got a few emails that were hours late. Later today, I'm getting nothing. I phoned Sympatico & I finally got out of them that the problem is with MSN. Eventually, all Sympatico clients will be put on the new MSN email platform. I had them walk me through changing to the new platform & still no email. One tech person blames it on my Norton 2004, which has Email Scanning turned off, as recommended by Sympatico for this new platform thingy. Sorry, I'm not super tech literate.

Another tech help call claims it's MSN's fault at this point & they're not giving Sympatico any idea how long it will take to fix. They're inundated with calls on this. I haven't had one email since early this a.m., and I don't think any are getting out. :( To say the least, this is really inconvenient!

secotton : I thought what I've learned with email and sendmail stuff, is that when an email is sent, it goes to your local SMTP server. This is when the SMTP server passes it to the POP3 mail server again.

sending email client --> SMTP --> SMTP --> POP3 --> recv. email client

Maybe I'm wrong on this one - but in some way - the SMTP server does handle both incoming and outgoing emails.
