anon : Telmex customers unhappy with the slowdown affecting their Vonage VoIP won't be happy switching to Satellite. I installed a DirecWay system in Dec 2004 and signed up for a Vonage-type service (iconnecthere.com) and it simply wouldn't work. It turned out that DirecWays UPLOAD speeds are horrible, at times as low as 19k, but never higher than dialup. I ended up subscribing to Crystal Voice, which is cheap, but outgoing only and the delay is annoying at best.

anon : Hello from Mexico,

I just read your post and have a few answers. Yes Mexico has its problems but depending on where you live there can be a lot of tranquility.I have been here about 3 years and I vacation in Europe, South America and the US sometimes.

Mexico probably has the best natural resources in North America and they are largely undeveloped. Why? Corrupt government. Imagine being able to try to be the police of the world as the US tries to do. Imagine a country with only one political party for over 70 years!!! A country of monopoly. Only gas is Pemex. Only phone is Telmex. The Catholic Church is one of the biggest deterents. Get the picture?

The absence of a large middle class. Uneducated Mexico cross the border because of the existence of jobs that lazy Americans do not want to do. Educated Mexicans such as doctors, lawyers, educators wouldn`t think of moving to the US. The US has something called Welfare and General Assistance in some states. It is better for many to collect welfare and food stamps than work for a living.

In Mexico, that does not exist. No work, no eat. That`s why very few illegal aliens get into trouble. They work to help out at home. No holdups, no women walking the streets.Just a low profile.

In Latin culture, the elderly are taken care of and respected. It's very rare your son would want to declare you mentally incompetent to get their inheritance early.
We all get old and frail. Your chances of getting mugged are a lot greater in the US.

Depending on where you reside, a person may want to retire and live the good life. San Miguel de Allende is one place of notoriety. Mexico is a good place to relax for a few years and live large if you plan it well.

The quality of life is on the way up. The quality of life in the US, well are you really better off?

anon : Funny you should say that. I am a member here but because of what I'm about to say I want to be anonymous for this post - if I wasn't someone might make the connection with the person I'm talking about and things could get ugly.

A couple of years ago I got into an argument with one of the other members in one of the forums, who just happened to live in Mexico. There were several indications that he was originally an American, and he was also quite confrontational. It was one of those situations where I couldn't understand where the guy was coming from in some of the things he was saying. Another thing was that he seemed to change his alias every so often.

Then another member sent me a PM to clue me in, with a link to the guy's personal web page. How shall I say this, the web page made one think he might be behaving like some of the Catholic priests that have made the wrong kind of news lately. What shocked me was that he could apparently be fairly open about it there. The web page did not actually come right out and say "I am a gay pedophile" but if you read between the lines just a little, that was definitely the impression you came away with, and it was certainly the impression of the guy who sent me the PM.

Hiding out is one possibility, but I suspect that some Americans go to Mexico because they can do things there that would get them imprisoned for a very long time if they did them in the U.S., not that such things are necessarily legal there, but the system is so corrupt that the officials can be bribed to look the other way.

Also there are probably Americans that move there to get affordable prescription medications or medical treatments that are banned in the United States. After the FDA shut down all the Hoxsey cancer clinics in the U.S., one was opened in Mexico and there are probably people who are alive today because of that clinic. I'm not suggesting that all Mexican clinics are better than their U.S. counterparts but if you have ever had a loved one die of cancer and then you read what happened to Hoxsey, you might get very angry at the FDA and the AMA. Again these are Americans who don't agree with certain U.S. laws and want an alternative, only in this case it's for good purposes rather than evil.

anon : Well, I just happen to be the one who posted that over at vonage-forum, and imagine my surprise to discover this thread!

I genuinely wanted to know why anyone from America would choose to retire in Mexico. I asked whether there were economic ("Is it a lot cheaper to live there?"), or cultural ("How are Americans treated there?") advantages to living in Mexico. I admitted that my impression of Mexico is that the country is dirty, corrupt and generally unsafe, as evidenced by the millions of illegal immigrants eagerly fleeing Mexico each year to come to our country. So I asked again, "What's the attraction for an American to want to live in Mexico?"

Now I didn't think any of that was "appalling," "amazing," or just "flat-out wrong." I thought it was inquisitive and honest.

Now here's the interesting part. I never got an answer. No one over there ever came up with a reason why Americans would move to Mexico, nor did anyone here. Well, I take that back...I did receive one Private Message over there from someone who said most Americans who leave the US for a life in Mexico do so as a means of hiding, and the sender also predicted I'd never get a public answer to my question for that very reason.

So there you go, and I'll stand behind all of it.

Is it a lot cheaper to live there? And how are Americans treated there?
