bah! my school!

First day of school here at Mt. Union College in Alliance, Ohio. I came expecting the internet to be very annoying. I did not expect gaming, any P2P, irc, or any other activity to work, no big deal.

When I got here, things were MUCH worse. It seems the admins have blocked EVERY port. They even blocked ftp access! Now before you go screaming file trading, I actually use ftp for legit purposes. I have a website, and now I can no longer update it. I was planning on starting a computer business here at school, and use some of my web space - can't do that anymore!

Everything on the LAN is also blocked. No network file sharing, not even network gaming! My friends and I tried playing halo over system link - we can no longer do that. I am bringing a spare router with me next time I go home.

To keep this in the forum, without being a rant, I would like your guy's advice. I plan on going to my [computer admin, dean, president of the school] (pick one) and complain. I know they are doing this for security, but this is unacceptable. I have a friend in the help desk and he said there was a simple explanation - they are being lazy and just closed everything.

Any valid points I could also bring up to whomever I talk to?

bring up valid educational reasons as to why you need to do certain things online
if you go in just complaining about gaming, they most likely wont care
but explain that ftp can be used to download linux or administer a website or something along those lines that would be educational and they should hear you out
other than that....you can try http tunnel or something else to maybe get past the blocks :/
