I think there's a whole section of the population at the lower end of the IQ and educational range that you must not have ever had much contact with. I met quite a few in the military, and have had quite a few more work for me over the years. They get scammed this way all the time, and sadly it is some of the ones with the greatest personal honesty and faith in their fellow man who get fleeced the worst and most often.

That said, a lot of the people involved at least have enough intelligence and street smarts that they have to be suppressing the voice that tells them "if it looks too good to be true, it is", and instead are letting themselves be lured by the lure of some sort of "deal". It may be true that there are some "real" profits for a few who get in early on the top of the pyramid. I find it interesting that those people are willing to lie, or let themselves believe, that getting some initial payment is somehow validation that the whole scheme is sound and viable.
