call of duty mmo

yeah sounds crazy right?
activision-blizzard, and iw teaming up to make a call of duty type mmo?
blizzard being king of mmos, and activision hinting at taking part of the market to a new type of mmo can mean possibly blizzards big hush hush mmo is really cod based

heres the full article for those behind walls:

Massive Attack: Call of Duty MMO
By Tim Colwill - Fri Nov 27, 2009 11:26am
The launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was pretty difficult to ignore, especially for the PC gaming crowd. But in between the controversy over the lack of dedicated servers, lack of console commands, unflinchingly violent terrorist level and wild, unsubstantiated rumours that the game would occasionally release thousands of live ferrets directly into your computer case, we all skipped over something rather interesting: there are very strong indications that Activision are looking to turn the beloved Call of Duty franchise into an MMO.

The LA Times reported last week on the hype surrounding the Modern Warfare 2 launch – the usual fare, gamers dressed up in costume, staying up until midnight, and so on. But it was the very end of the article that caught our eye:

” Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.

One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. The genre, in which Activision's Blizzard Entertainment subsidiary is a leader, requires huge upfront investments but can be very profitable as players pay a monthly subscription fee.”

Not content with letting Treyarch and Infinity Ward do all the work, Activision has set up a fully-fledged third studio to work on future versions of Call of Duty. And a source close to the company openly admits that the MMO model is under consideration.

Now it’s easy to brush this off as mere rumour and speculation – mostly because it is – but some of you may recall that Activision were putting out a clandestine survey in the middle of the year asking players how they felt about the concept of a subscription-based online Call of Duty service. Specifically:

The potential online service would enable you to get even more out of Call of Duty with a new offering of online features and services that enhance the multiplayer experience and provide exclusive access to a group of gameplay enhancements [...] This potential new online Call of Duty service would be available for purchase as part of a special-edition game package, or by subscription (monthly, quarterly, or yearly). You would be able to start and cancel the subscription at any time, and any payment method will be acceptable (credit card, debit card, cash, check, etc.)

And of course it’s no secret that one of the major selling points of the Activision Blizzard merger-to-form-Devastator was that Blizzard are the undisputed kings of the massively multiplayer market, with the experience necessary to continue to rule over it. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick rightfully hungers to leverage Activision’s cornucopia of intellectual properties in new and exciting ways. As he explained while speaking to investors, way back in 2008:

” ..when you think about other properties that we own and control, like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetize that...”

So yes, this is rumour and speculation, but like all rumours that inevitably turn out to be true, it just refuses to die. Are Activision considering a Call of Duty MMO? Well the only sensible answer is that they would be insane not to. MMOs continue to go from strength to strength in the games market, and therefore it seems inevitable that every successful franchise – and if there was ever a successful franchise, it’s Call of Duty - ends up receiving the online treatment in one way or another, even when it seems to make little sense.

But does this really mean we could soon be joining the Terrorism faction and spawning in the airport newbie zone, where Lord Chekhov demands we bring him the scalps of ten tourists? Only time will tell.

COD Modern Warefare 2 ................Who's buying?

Who's buying it for the PC? Is anyone really going to boycott this game?

Seems to me this will be to much of a bad ass game to just not buy because of the lack of dedicated servers.

So stop kidding yourselves and go out and buy a copy!

COD 4 Moderrn Warfare....

There is no way to pick a save point - correct? I have not found a way yet at least. I am doing the Chernobyl mission and at the end with a injured friend - I did not place the mines well and need to replace them but the only save point when resuming the game is immediately before the helicopters land.

I believe I am doomed to playing the entire mission again - just need to make sure it is correct before I go and do that...

CoD: MW2 To Not Support Dedicated Servers Or Mods

Absolutely unacceptable. I will not be purchasing this game if they follow through with this. They already bombed with CoD: WaW's horrible support and difficulty in playing user made maps and mods.

Here is the link to the article

http://games.on.net/article/7196/Modern_Warfare_2_downgrade_sparks_World_War_III

And the petition being sent to Infinity Ward

http://www.petitiononline.com/dedis4mw/petition.html

At the moment, the petition is not working, but keep trying. They need to know they're making really stupid decisions. Remember the days when companies would release their SDK's and everyone would make maps and mods and it would be easy to use them? Yeah, that's the good stuff. Support the companies that still do that.

Companies seem to be shifting their effort to please console gamers. PC gaming has always been and will always be the best, most diverse, and most skillful way to compete in online gaming.

Call Of Juarez 2 Is Beautiful

Seriously. One of the most visually beautiful games I've ever seen, and I'm not even done with the game. The only contenders being Crysis, Far Cry 2, and the original Call of Juarez. And the best part...it runs as smooth as butter. I run a quad core with an 8800gt (and 22 inch monitor), and with the graphics cranked all the way up there's absolutly no lag. The engine is silky smooth. That's good coding.

And it's not just the incredible graphics. It's the level of detail. The spiders crawling on the tree trunks. The way the roots of trees enter the ground. The shadowing. The lighting. The way the trees and grass move in the wind.

Trees and rocks have always been a kind of Holy Grail for game developers. It's very hard to create realistic looking trees and rocks. But the guys that made COJ2 have gotten about as close as any game I've seen so far.

I was just playing in a level out in the open desert, and I really felt like I was in a desert. Very realistic. And the backgrounds don't look fuzzy and "painted". They really look obtainable. Like you could just take a walk to the distant mountains.

And it's not just pretty. Like the original COJ, it's got an engaging storyline and fun gameplay.

Anyways, I just keep stopping mid-mission to look at a tree, or a rock, or a horse and I figured I'd see if anyone else knows where I'm coming from.

Game Suggestions - Diablo Clone?

Hi guys,
I am a long time City of Heroes player, and also play a bit of L4D when I feel like seeing blood.

Recently I've been wanting another Diablo clone, and decided I really don't want to wait for Diablo III since that isn't going to be here any time soon. I played Diablo extensively through the years, but never played Diablo 2, and at this point, I would be too far behind the curve of a very old game. I'd like something newer.

I REALLY REALLY wanted Torchlight, until I found out if wasn't multiplayer, which is a deal breaker for me. This game looks almost exactly like what I wanted. I have been suggested Sacred 2 but didn't want to dish out $50 bucks if I can help it.

Can someone put together some suggestions for me?
