[M & G] Season Closer

We promised ourselves we would try this at the end of the season.

This is a definite, we are doing it and we just want to see who goes.
Place: - North Fork of Long Island
Date: - October 11 or 25th
Purpose: - Wine tasting (we've gathered some knowledge after last year so we can maximize our "sampling".)

Let me know if you are interested in going. A small group is fine or we can handle the gargantuan groups also.

Transportation from the City is available (we'll get one of the city slickers to drive you).

How come us hockey fans don't have our own thread?

[Need Info] owning a shotgun/rifle in nyc

Can anyone here discuss as to how difficult it is obtaining a license for a shotgun/rifle in NYC?

How long is the process? I did find a pdf form on the NYPD website - but I would appreciate information on the process from someone that either knows how the process works or someone who has experience with obtaining these types of firearms in the city.

thanks.

[Need Info] Driving Through Prospect Park

I used to be able to drive through Prospect Park from the Parkside entrance to the Grand Army Plaza exit/entrance and recently I notice every time I'm driving around there the Park Lane seems to be closed to traffic. I tried looking on the Prospect Park website but couldn't find any info. What days and times is the road though/around Prospect Park open for drivers?

[Need Info] how to get from Valhalla, NY to Philadelphia, PA?

Does anybody know the best way to get from Valhalla, NY to Philadelphia, PA? I am from California and will be flying to New York for an interview (location here: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=New+York+Medical+College&city=Valhalla&state=NY&address=2+Sunshine+Cottage+Rd&zipcode=10595&country=US&latitude=41.08481&longitude=-73.80643&geocode=ADDRESS&id=1313824 ). Unfortunately, I will need to be in Philadelphia the following morning for another interview (location here: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=Jefferson+Medical+College&city=Philadelphia&state=PA&address=1025+Walnut+St+%23+100&zipcode=19107&country=US&latitude=39.94855&longitude=-75.157786&geocode=ADDRESS&id=2311928 ). I don't really want to take another plane for such a short distance and the cab fare is going to be outrageous. Is there a better way to get from Valhalla to Philadelphia? I'm not familiar with NY at all and would appreciate some help. Thanks!

[Travel] Help Historic Sites Survive

I was just watching CBS Sunday Morning and they had a segment on how historic homes and landmarks are now also facing tough economic times and how many of them will either have to close or start selling off historical/art items to keep themselves operational.

One that they mentioned was Fort Ticonderoga. Don't know if any of you have ever visited it, but I took a side trip there once, and it was fantastic to walk around there. To go up to the battlements and view Lake Champlain and just step back in time. To actually touch the cannons.

I don't know about the rest of you, but there are certain historical sites where the sense of the place seems to just permeate the air, and it's very easy to imagine what it must have been like during its historical "moment in time". There is a sense of peace in those places, which is ofttimes strange, considering that some of them were places of great violence. Fort Ticonderoga is one of them, and I've found Antietam National Battlefield (Sharpsburg MD) to be another. Another place with that same sense of peace with a totally non-violent history is the Canterbury Shaker Museum (Canterbury NH).

I would encourage everyone to take a road trip to their local landmarks and help support them. Around this area you don't have to travel far to find them, and most entrance fees are low or non-existent. Buy a little something in the gift shop - many make their profit from sales there. You get a nice day out, it's inexpensive, you learn something, and you help keep our history alive. :)
