Ha. Ha.
We can simply blame the NFL and the rest of the sports networks, that create their own "sub networks" (espn 3, espn classic, nfl network, big ten network, etc) buy games that people want to see, then gouge the providers in their prices.
P.S. A friend of mine has UVerse that does a lot of torrent download. He claims that when he turns on the TV, the internet speeds are cut in half. Anyone else facing this problem?

I'm glad I dropped U-verse. When it first came out they were far cheaper than Comcast but now Comcast has better deals than U-verse does. I get 16/2, unlimited calling throughout the continent, and all the channels I like to watch for like 115 a month. And Comcast here doesn't charge you for HD service... you only have to rent a HD cablebox. Comcast is fairly competitive and having U-verse in the area helped drop Comcast's prices here.
With DOCSIS 3 coming I can expect much faster internet speeds. I doubt U-verse will go over 18/1.5 anytime soon. |

| The price is only going to climb
The time is so primed for someont to come up with real online content. The telcos and cable companies are going to continue raising rates substantially over the next 3 years (where else are you going to get your tv and internet?) Netflix and Xbox 360 is proving that the technology is there. I havent seen apple TV but maybe thats it. But I can't wait for someone to make a nice online package where you turn the channel with a mouse. You will still have to go through the cable or telco for the internet access but it's a step in the right direction. The cable and telcos have spent millions in advertising telling us that "bundling" is a good thing. It's NOT! |

I've had U-Verse for 9 months and can't say I've seen my DL speeds drop when the TVs are on. I pay for 18 down and 1.5 up, their highest tier, and use the U200 telly package. My 2 always-on boxes are wired to the gateway with 3 other family PCs on wireless. I torrent heavily -- mostly telly shows. Often my torrenting slows the wireless connections, but I've never noticed a slowdown from telly usage, which is normally one standard and one HD running concurrently.
Interestingly, I upg'd to the 18 (from 10kbps?) just before Thanksgiving, but I've not seen any difference for my extra $10 per month. |

The price increases i may be up to face (or someone new). $10 now for the hd tier (used to be free), $5 increase on U200 package, DVR no longer free but costing $9, 2 stb's costing $7+$7.
$10 $5 $9 $7 $7
a $38 increase from the price the were offering a year ago until now. All these numbers exclude tax to make it easier.
I pay $89 now (U200 1 dvr 2 stb 6mb internet)with an increase of $38 to now $127. That is a 42% increase in one year when they vow not to increase prices but don't lock price in with a contract.
Now I am not sure how many of these new prices will effect me until next month but the cost for a new customer from a year ago is staggering. The satellites are looking cheap now. |

I guess the point is that no matter what service you go with you will see a rate hike. Seems they are coming at the rate of once a year on average. Of course, just like in other threads, there are people who bitch about the rates because they have the service. The people who have something else are quick to point that out, but they fail to remember that their rates went up earlier in the year.
Ah well....
Point is that there is competition out there. If you feel the grass is greener with Comcast or Directv, then you should switch. Just be prepared to see a rate hike eventually after you move. Its inevitable. -- My domain - Nightfall.net |

As for the DVR, AFAIK, it is still included with the majority of their packages, like U200, U300 and U400 and even the UFamily. |

| Show Me the Money!
I'd like to see data showing how the money is changing in all parties.
Is AT&T making a bigger profit, are they staying level, or are they actually losing money and simply attempting to reduce their losses?
Are the content providers just being greedy and trying to make a few extra dollars? Are advertisers not paying as much to the content providers because they are losing money? In turn, are content providers trying to stay level or are they, too, losing money and simply trying to minimize their losses?
Is it the talent (actors/writers) that is increasing their profits, causing a similar reaction from the content providers?
I don't need specifics, just averages, and I would be able to tell which party was making an increase or decrease by percentage. Who is losing money and who is making money? Do we blame Tom Cruise and the writers for Saturday Night Live? Is it Disney or some other media giant behind these price increases? Is this just AT&T raising prices to cover the cost of improving the services and infrastructure?
Since everyone always seems to blame the other guy, I suspect that everyone is taking a piece of the pie, except the customer. Regardless if the increases are used to generate pure profits, to keep an even keel, or to soften the blow from an economic downturn, everyone is making more money except the customer. |

Where's my time machine? Wouldn't you just love to go back to those legislators/"leaders" that took all that ATT pac money and show them what the future of their State-wide franchises now look like? They should have built-in price controls and guarantees with heavy fee penalties if ATT promises didn't come to fruition. To bad there isn't a telco-lemon law. I am mainly burned about PEG access - ATT claims they support it, but they don't because our "leaders" allowed them to create a lose-lose scenario for this most important 1st amendment forum. Welcome to America, Inc. (a subsidiary of ChinaCo). Due to the recession hindsight is no longer 20/20 it's now 5/10 and falling.

It's a lot of things...
The cost of producing programming is going up TV advertising is on a decline (local & national) Viewership is down in favor of Internet, video games, DVD So the programmers are increasing rates across the board.
They're losing landline customers hand over fist They're losing highly profitable business data circuits (leased lines, frame relay, T1, ISDN, etc) They're losing out to cable for consumer broadband They're spending a ton of money to deploy U-Verse service
I'm actually surprised the rate hikes aren't higher. |
