One exception...

...Ventura County, California. Verizon has very poor coverage in Ventura County. No service and dropped calls.

AT&T didn't do well because...

They have a botched 3G network in many places.
Eg. Southern California, they have deployed 1/4 of their spectrum for 3G services on 1900MHz (while 850MHz would do a better coverage job).
This resulted in many seeing low signal (3G iPhone) and many dropped calls on 3G devices (how much voice + data can you push over a single 5MHz carrier in an area like Los Angeles?).

They've finally started deploying a 2nd 3G carrier on 850 MHz around here, and guess what... my 3G dropped calls have effectively stopped, and the browser now works.

AT&T CS Reps blame the phone or SIM card on every issue (they aren't technical... just first line of defense)
I did warranty exchange 3x with no fix.

Corporate Reports?

Consumer Reports is bought and paid for. Anyone who trusts them for much more than toilet paper...

Not that AT&T has anything to brag about overall but if Verizon is really "tops" the U.S. Wireless industry is indeed in dismal shape.

Not the Best, But the Least Worst

Verizon Wireless is not the best but the least worst of the cell phone providers in the US. I know people who have corporate at&t cell phones that have bought Verizon cell phones so that they can communicate when they are out in the real world, in this case northern Kentucky.

I have lent my Verizon cell phones over the years to various people whose phones did not work in some specific area of the country. I will say the next "least worst" is T-Mobile based on my observations.

These are my opinions, you are entitled to yours.

I agree with your viewpoint.
Also, there is typically very little difference (from what I've seen in the past) in overall ratings between the best and worst... meaning Verizon Wireless _really_ isn't that much better than Sprint. Similarly, Sprint isn't that much worse than Verizon Wireless

Verizon Anything????

I've had such bad experiences with Verizon, anything with their brand name makes me run the other way screaming like a frightened schoolgirl.

Well why should that be a surprise? I was a customer when Cingular (now AT&T) rolled out the 850 band in LA and it was an utter disaster. Constant dropped calls, calls that were misrouted and calls that went silent on one end. Th Long Beach area was so bad I was able to terminate my contract early and go to the carrier ranked number two in this survey, T-Mobile. I love them, the service is excellent. Why Apple didn't choose them for the iPhone is beyond me

Re: Verizon Anything????

It just shows that people who enjoy Verizon also enjoy being nickle and dimed to death because every feature is disabled on their phones. Want to copy a photo you took from your phone? Hook it up to your PC and do the transfer ..? HA! But for a modest fee you can EMAIL it to yourself.

That's Verizon for you. Cripple the device so you can't do anything you SHOULD be able to do with it. EVERYTHING has a fee.

I had no problems using Bluetooth to transfer all the pics off my phone to my PC on my VX8300... Now I know they still have many thing locked down that I wish they didn't, but they have made progress in this area.

 Sprint

I recently tried out service with Sprint. I paid over a hundred for the phone. I cancelled service and returned the phone. Its been more than a week since they got the phone back. Sprint still hasn't given me my money back for the phone. Sprint knows they have the phone back and that I didn't even use any minutes on the phone. Sprint is refusing to return my money until they send me out a "final" bill and then I have to call back in to request the money back. Once I request it they have to send the request to another department who reviews it for up to 48 hours before making a decision. If they grant it then they issue a check. Then it takes another few days before they mail it and then up to two weeks for me to get the check.

In all of this Sprint Customer Service stinks as my experience proves.

Re: Corporate Reports?

Really? Is that why they don't accept advertising in their print magazine? Furthermore, this was a survey of their members. They are just reporting what their readers said.

Listen, you really should acquaint yourself with Google and read up on things before you post. Then you would have found this about CU:

"Like the rest of Consumers Union, the Research Center is free of corporate influence and advertising. Its surveys are not commissioned or funded by industry, government, academia or big media. Rather, these surveys are designed to gather unbiased, objective information from consumers for the sole purpose of informing and protecting them.

Perhaps this proves how technically inept the public is...

...If they think Verizon is really the best. LOL. As several others have pointed out, Verizon disables just about everything on their handsets. No bluetooth transfers. You get to pay for everything, nickel and dimed to death. Then again, the average Joe is apparently clueless and probably believes they (Verizon) disabled or neutered certain features for their benefit!

Sprint Responds

I am in Sprint's communications group, and here are my thoughts. Yes, we are in last place, but our extensive efforts in 2008 to offer the best customer service have resulted in improvement in almost every market in the Consumer Reports survey, and all results were above the 60 threshold which indicates that respondents are "fairly well satisfied" with service and connectivity. That's not the best, but our improvements are paying off and third parties are regularly citing that. J.D. Power has indicated we have improved in much of the country, and Pali Research recently reported we went from last to first in their survey of customer service. Our internal measures show dramatic improvement in customer service, and it just takes time for that to be fully reflected in customer responses. But we are getting there. And as for the snarky remark about our being last to offer prorated ETFs so customers won't "flee," we were delayed only because the massive integration of computer systems following our merger prevented us from doing it sooner. Regarding the CR study, yes, we weren't at the top, but don't for a minute think we aren't working as hard as possible every day to get there.

I guess it depends on you want. Verizon does not have the coolest phones, and does tend to charge a lot of add-on fees.

On the other hand, you can reliably make phone calls.

Re: Sprint Responds

I just have three things to say to this.

1) I called Sprint days ago and although Sprint sent me a return label by email Sprint didn't have the tracking # in there systems.

2) Sprint CS has always treated me rudely and as an idiot.

3) Verizon CS has never given me any crap. PERIOD.

Edit: The thread starter said they made improvements in several markets. No matter what day I call I still get the item #2 treatment.

@comcast.net

I rather pay sprint 99.99 for simply everything then verizon almost 99 for 450 minutes and data and text. I think last I calculated it was that or 89.99 But that doesnt include gps which still additional fee.

-illusion

PS. I have had them all , this year tmobile jack up their rates for little service they provide. Att pricey like verizon. ATT getting little bad with customer service recently from my experince. Then you have verizon, locked down , high price for less. lol , I figure most of the time I can get sprint to do what I want. Just going to get the plan and everything I want so I never have to really call. Honestly most people dont really ever have to call their cell phone company til they want a new phone. Yes I know telesales department is the worst department because returning phones is a snail process.
