Click the "download now" link and all you get is a screen to sign up for their newsletter and promotions. Once you "sign up" you get NOTHING! Figures, works about as well as Zone Alarm products do (NOT). |

I used ZA free, but a few days ago I changed my Hard Drive from a basic disk to a dynamic volume, and that seems to have made it go crazy... even after I reinstalled it a couple of times. -- "We are now in the golden age of thieves. | Obligatory discussion about the best software firewalls
1st - the best firewalls are external hardware (usually part of a router). 2nd - IF a software firewall is needed as well, the free firewall in Windows is more than adequate for most.

There is 1 small bit of fine print - it is for 1 computer ONLY. So, if you have a couple PCs at home, this isn't for you unless you want to commit fraud and sign up using separate email addresses and separate authorization codes. -- My BLOG .. .. "1st - the best firewalls are external hardware (usually part of a router). 2nd - IF a software firewall is needed as well, the free firewall in Windows is more than adequate for most."
For anyone who states this really lame security advice. I'd ask that you rethink you're idea of what is secure. And maybe open your mind to doing some actual research. Especially in regards to how the average person uses their computer. The Microsoft firewall even though it now has fixed it's previous shortcomings still is far from ideal. I'd also venture to say that the person above has never heard of the concept of layered security or the fact that routers aren't the end all be all for many reasons.
Anyone want to place a bet that the reply will be something that states you have no need for antivirus as long as you don't visit bad sites and have your computer locked down properly? Yet people eat this garbage advice up like it is the holy grail of computer security.
And don't even make me give you the smack down if you start in with that fan boy crap. Especially considering I haven't used a ZoneAlarm product in years. If I had the option to I would in a heartbeat though. -- Test PC Security Cable Diagnostics Blog ZoneAlarm Help Vista x64 Comcast BroadVox Direct |

Yeah, I just hit the "Download Now" link, filled in my name and email addy, and all it told me was "You have successfully subscribed to ZoneAlarm Patch Tuesday offers. Thank You!". Nothing about being sent a link to download.
No big deal or anything, if a download link never comes I can just delete that email address. |

Fraud?
Perhaps they mean for ONE computer PER free license download?
If you have 4 people in your family, and 4 computers, and each installs it on their own, is that fraud? Or what if I do it for them?
No, I think it's simply one download/key combination per computer. Do they state you may only sign up once per person? |

Iggy, Please tell us exactly WHY you need more security on your desktop system?
I can give you a reason MOST PEOPLE do not:
A home DSL/cable router is by nature a firewall. Without specifically allowing/granting access to the outside world, nobody can enter your local network from the Internet. Your desktop is only accessible by other machines on the local network. (Yes, wireless is an issue, but there is WPA, mac filtering, etc)
A software firewall in the scenario above would allow you to block and/or monitor outgoing connections. Is this necessary for most users? Spyware/malware aside, this is only useful when wanting to stop applications from "calling home". Again, typical users won't be doing this. |
