It appears as if this is only meant to allow streaming over your in home network, its not a Slingbox type of service. However, I cant imagine it would be that hard to open a port on your router or use a VPN to watch the stream from elsewhere..... |

The only way to get to the CyberLink apps is through www.directv.com/directv2pc
Any attempts at circumventing this will result in broken links.
This is a great app that functions well on a decent machine. A trick I enjoy is starting a recording then watching it on my PC after the buffer gets a minute or two into it. |

It is intended for home use only. It requires a tremendous amount of bandwidth and I doubt there are many folks who will have the upload bandwidth to use this app outside of the LAN. Cyberlink and DirecTV must play by the rules on this app. As a matter of fact, unless you have HDCP compatible connection for your monitor, you can't view HD broadcasts even over the LAN. |

| Kinda pointless to me
Is it just me or is this backwards. I mean once I get my XX" plasma/LCD and HD DVR it's a downgrade to send the video to my puny LCD on my computer.
On the other hand, an easy way to get the video content I've stored on my computer to display on my TV screen. That's a Killer App. Any video service provider that wants to sell me that box, I'm an instant subscriber.
I know There are boxes that can do this for me already, but really, how may video decoders should I need to hook up to my screen? KISS. |

..and with laptop monitors doing 1920x1200, I'd go for it. |

| HDTV on PC
This could be a good thing. I have put off getting satellite service because there is no way to get an HD feed from the box to my computer.
With Cable TV, I can just send the coax directly into my HD TV tuner to get all of my locals in High Def. There is no other type of HD input to a PC that I can find.
The reason I prefer watching on my computer is that I have a projector hooked up through the VGA port that is capable of a true High Def signal. Watching football on a 15' diagonal screen beats the "tiny" HDTV in my living room. This could open up other (non-internet) viewing options. |

It gives an error if you have more than one monitor connected. I've read, but haven't tried yet, that turning off one monitor in the driver software will then allow the remaining monitor to work. A number of users at DBSTalk report other problems with app lockups and crashes, and incompatibilities with PowerDVD software. |

Check out TVersity or even XBMC.
The second is my fav because I can stream HD content. -- I am looking for population control volunteers. |

| I like it
I do have TVs in a lot of rooms, as many Americans do anymore. But there are times I want to watch stuff on my HD DVR in a different room.
Also, I like the interface, it is very easy. I can watch TV and work/play. Plus, it is in high-def (though I am not sure what resolution yet).
I did not know about it until today.
Looking at the bandwidth it uses, yes, I can do it but probably not in too many locations. I have not tested how it adjusts for network problems or anything but on your local LAN or on a high speed network, works well.
I also have a slingbox and it has its advantages as well. For example, a slingbox I can watch at my camp in the middle of the woods at 768k, the Directv app I doubt it.
The Directv app, perfect for moving around the home with and watching what is on my main DVR. I cannot afford a high def DVR in every room so some are SD or just HD receivers.
So, 8 stars out of 10? |

DirecTV now has: 1 - the ability to 'play' (act as a client) media over the HR2x series from Windows Media acting as a server on a PC. (Note: TVersity also works). Music/video/pictures.
2 - the ability to send (act as a server) media from the HR2x series to a PC with the DirecTV2PC software client.
Logical folks come to the conclusion that it will soon give the HR2x the ability to act as a client for another HR2x acting as a server - i.e. true MRV (multi-room viewing) capability. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen - but it seems to be the single most asked for 'enhancement' on the HR2x (next to 'stability' ) |

| Firewalls can screw up the ability for the app to access the internet and your DVRs. Depending on what firewall software you use, you need to add the .exe file that was installed to your "allowed" list.
The app installs in \Program Files\DirecTV\DirecTV by default (or \Program Files(x86)\DirecTV\DirecTV for Vista 64) and is named DIRECTV2PC(TM).exe |
