Comments on news posted 2008-09-08 11:47:34: The second quarter was the worst quarter ever for DSL additions, with AT&T and Verizon barely adding 100,000 broadband customers, but collectively losing 220,000 DSL customers (130,000 for Verizon, 90,000 for AT&T). ..

Who cares?

Who cares huh? You all are fighting over who has a better connection. Its cable and dsl subscribers who are the reason why there are millions without this "Dying technology" because you guys keep complaining about 512k and 3 MB connections or whatever.

Meanwhile I am 2 miles. 2 MILES outside from city limits. for 7 years AT&T saying 3 more months dsl will be out there. I would give anything. ANYTHING for a 250K connection. Beats dial - up 19.5kb and satellite which is usually about 60kb during the day. Stop your complaining. People can't get dsl or cable because the cable and dsl companies are trying to make the beauty queens happy. Don't say move either. Firstly no one can afford a house in our economy. Secondly no one wants one where there is no high speed internet ask that guy above. Lastly I am 17!

I have never in my life been able to watch videos online, download anything, play a single game online, update our computers and we have like 5, download email attachments and im lucky if we can even surf the web during the day.

Everyone who has dsl or cable are LUCKY! I keep hearing something like there making AT&T bring dsl to everyone in 2008 I think its lie I have never read that or heard it from a reliable source. Were stuck here and have no high speed, yet people are complaining about a poor 512KB.

Come stay here for 4 weeks bing your game systems and everything and try satellite. 300MBs a day, your lucky if you get 60KB and that's assuming the satellite works which half the time it don't. Anyways sorry but makes me mad when people argue of their speeds. Id give anything for this "dying technology" and so would millions of other people.

Re: Who cares?

bravo well said great post just give me a 1.5 dsl connection for a reasonable price that's all i want too.who do you use Hughes or wild blue.i use Hughes and was paying 80.00 a month for 1.5mb 375 threshold, and just downgraded back to home plan 1.0mb 200 mb threshold

i got tired of paying for speed i never ever got until after midnight.IM still paying for speed i don't get. i average about 815kbps and down to about 200 during peak times, but at least IM saving 20 bucks a month, but i do have to say the reduced threshold hurts thank god for the fapmon.

Re: Who cares?

We have stupid Hughes too. For about 4 hours a day about 9-1 am the satellite don't even work. Comes up a bunch of red flags and everything. All they say is were sorry should clear up in a few minutes and its rare this happens. BS is what that is.

They have a monopoly going and the stupid FCC who can die for all I care because they don't care about us in rural America. Our bandwidth caps are ridiculous and so are the speeds.

Not only that, but I think they should be investigated. Because every time I try and go to bell south or Verizon or any internet company I swear the pages don't load. They just stop and every now and then it will come up saying there is a error with the satellite yet I will have tab open surfing another page and it works fine.

And I hear there blocking people from playing WoW with other MMO's yet the FCC can get mad at Comcast for throttling people on Peer to Peer networks.

So I asked a few people and they said the same thing happens to them. Hughes needs to be shut down and the FCC needs to stop focusing on Comcast owning 33% of the market and stop focusing on TV and address the millions who don't have affordable broadband and good speeds reliable service and reasonable bandwidth caps.

Expand to the unservicable

What telco companies should do is take DSL out to areas where no one can get cable or DSL. I know it sounds stupid and obvious, but they mind as well expand is theyre not going to be adding any more customers.

The way I see it, if theyre only making 100,000 customers a year, they mind as well expand out to the areas that cant get it. At least then, they could double the customers, mayeb even more. Heck, they could even make it a monopoly

Sounds too expensive? Why not sell or move central offices away from people who can get Fios and force them to switch? I mean TV is doing that to digital. its a Win win situation.

damn telcos

thats a good idea but they're to busy coming up with new lies to trick people their existing service instead of expanding or upgrading the current infrastructure. have i mentioned how much embarq pisses me off?
the trend i noticed is if you call them and they can't sell you something your nothing to them not helpful at all and they never call you back, it would be a waste of time!

Re: damn telcos

oh yea you are treated like rural trash from these company's.i called up at&t to ask about dsl and they said be patient it was coming in which they have told me for 8 years,so i said ok just cut off my pots i don't use it not paying for nothing, and when you get dsl to me i will cut it back on.there was no wish you would stay,or sure you want to do that just ok and cut it off

one comment/observation...

It should be obvious WHY cable companies add more VOIP lines than telcos add cable-tv subscriptions. VALUE! Saving 20-85% off your POTS phone line while adding more features & flexibility are real tangible benefits, while telcos copy almost verbatim what cable companies do in cable-tv, except that they're devoid of most local public access/metro channels and local community content which most cable companies who have been in the business for 30 years customized for each community over time. No wonder telcos have a hard sell at and equal or higher price.

btw, at&t only plans to wire about 10% of their residential footprint with FTTP, the rest is ADSL2+ (good luck keeping customers when doc ver 3.0 comes calling)

DSL beats Cable in My Town

Had the "joy" of using cable bb last night... Unlike those "inflated" cable test resusts, I can maintain this (and more, depending what the packets contain ) all night:

DSL Is The New Dial-Up

In Canada everything is as slow as dial-up. Heck there's a lot of money to be made for any American company advertising dial-up to Canadians because dial-up costs triple in Canada what it costs in America. Yes there's the rich and the poor in Canada but no in-between. The rich opt for a dedicated line the rest of the population is going back to dial-up because both dsl and cable are useless thanks to caps throttling and overuse charges.

Availability

Availability is the big problem. People are realizing the advantage of broadband, and they love it. But, when they call for DSL, they're told they're too far from the central office or the service is so unreliable due to their distance, they switch.

Another problem is midgrade cable packages, like my 5mbps package, are able to compete with the highest DSL package. For instance if someone around here were to get AT&T's elite package, after overhead on a speedtest they'll see 4500kbps-5000kbps, If you're on the cable package I'm on you get the same if not a little better. Cable bundles are actually pretty tasty to people, and in most cases they match if not beat a few $'s a month than going with DSL and some satellite service once the promotion package is up. Let alone the savings after the first year.

One more thing to add: Most people who are in within distance for DSL have migrated from dial-up. But that has caught on and they now have whoever they're going to grasp from that, now what? Only reason I switched to cable: I'm too far from the central office to get as fast as I am with cable.

Re: Availability

I have been on dial up for 10 years and finally now DSL has been made availible in my area. I can get up to 5mb but chose to go with 3mb down and 640k up. This is like a godsend to me. I am going crazy waiting for my activation date which is in 2 days. I really feel for you that are stuck with dial up. At my moms house they have cable which is supposed to be 10mb but on some nights it is down to 3mb or 4mb. So in my opinion I would not be as happy if they brought out cable to my house instead of DSL.
