| That's not my job. - CWA Motto
If you have ever had to deal with a CWA worker from a Clec or ISP's point of view you will understand their motto.
It took 3 weeks and 4 different crews to bring a 50 pair cable into our building for one of our colo customers. That's after we provided a 3 inch conduit from out side the building to their rack with very few bends and their specified pull string. |

Yup! Inflation will eat that up. The longer you work for a company that gives out so-called cost of living raises, the less you make. Even if you move to other positions within the company, most of the time, you won't get the salary that someone off the street will get. -- Addicted to Broadband Reports. |

1 edit | reply to aaronwt But healthcare is increasing at insane rates. I have a small business with 15 employees and my Healthnet premium jumped 50% last year alone.
10.5% plus maintaining healthcare works out to a heathy raise. If the workers had to buy their own healthcare, it would decimate them. I think the CWA deserved more but don't dismiss what they did negotiate. These unseen costs like healthcare would shock you. |

Exactly right.. our previous contract was a 5 year contract, 2% a year ! So many people on this site was against the worker, its so sad. We, THE UNION, THE WORKERS, only wanted a fair share.
Call us greedy... ha.. people like HOTBOI and SUPERGIRL should be spanked. Ah hell, let'm spank each other, but please dont multiply. |

Fully paid health care, including retirees through 2011?
That's a good deal in this market. Forget 3% raises, it's the health care that was the deal maker. Most companies are making their employees pay 10,20,50% now, which is way more than 3% of pay... |

You know, it's whiners like you that tic me off. You and those like you can *always* do it better, faster, cheaper, blah, blah, blah - the list goes on and on. You're quick to point a finger at "union rules" when "X" doesn't happen to your liking.
They're WORK rules. They are the result of NEGOTIATING company and union desires. In the end, EVERYONE got enough of what they wanted to come to an agreement. What is so terrible about that? Do you prefer to be treated like some mindless drone? Do you trust management emphatically with your health & safety (that worked so well in the past that OSHA and the Department of Labor were created and still exist today - ever wonder why)?. Does management put your ability to provide for your family ahead of its profits and stock price?
Do you actually know what the problem of bringing that cable to the colo was - or are you just union bashing for the hell of it? Maybe you're jealous because these guys have better benes and make more than you? Maybe you have been working 45+ hours a week or Saturdays lately for your regular 40 hour pay - and seeing a work crew sent home by VZ because they didn't want to pay OT rates, angered you. You chose an "exempt" position - we however, did NOT. Do you see me complaining about YOUR employment package?
The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. You didn't see those guys when the job they had was to replace cables and poles damaged by natural disaster or accident in blistering heat, freezing cold, over night, etc. You see, the climate controlled data center work doesn't happen everyday for these guys - unlike it does for *YOU* |

Verizon employees do not get free service. They only get a discount on the phone portion of the bill. |

Yea well, cost of healthcare for corporations is of no concern of mine. Thanks to being a union member anyway. Aside from that, getting a semi-decent wage increase will help me KEEP UP with my current bills.. like paying $800 a month in gasoline.... & an obscene amount to heat my house this year.
Maybe you should stop being concerned with us getting free healthcare... and be more concerned with the root of the problem. THE COST OF THE HEALTHCARE itself. Write your politicians and have them figure out a way fix this problem.
If you people have a problem with us getting free healthcare and decent wages, dont let it be a problem... QUIT YOUR JOB and fill out applications for a union represented job ! OR FEEL FREE TO ORGANIZE ONE IN YOUR WORKPLACE !! |

Nothing wrong with that. It protects existing workers, while helping to offset costs in the future. It's a win for both sides in some sense, and a loss in others. You can't always have your cake and ice cream too. Companies have bottom lines, stock holders, and profit margins. A company has to balance this out with what they pay and contribute to workers. As let's face it, hard numbers aren't profits. If your company takes in X number (lets give an example 8 billion. 5 or 6 of that might be operating costs. Such costs might include worker pay, benefits, network upgrades, future build out, profits to stock holders, etc etc. So the company then is left with their profit margin of 2-3 billion in this example (not a real number) to play with. As we know, profits can go either way. Companies HAVE to put some aside for rainy days, in case fortunes turn. It's only common sense. This coming from someone who is extremely pro union. More or less its a negotiation and balancing act for both sides and costs. |
