 Competition?

First the telcos go after muni ftth projects, now they are attacking each other. Isn't greed great?

It's all a matter of who had done a better job of paying their lobbyists and bribing errr donating to the campaigns and funds of politicians. That's basically how these disputes get settled.

This From AT&T

To think that this complaint comes from AT&T, who between all the mergers, acquisitions and auctions controls more wireless spectrum than god. Figuring their existing 850MHz and 1900MHz band holdings plus the 700MHz and AWS spectrum they have acquired, I fail to see how they can complain.

Verizon obviously isn't scared of the merger... They're so fast, They're afraid of no one..

ATT needs to stop their whining and start upgrading their speeds. ATT is still 1.5mb here.

I personally wouldnt classify a Sprint/Clearwire combo as a little company, but I agree with your point. This "double whammy" clearly poses a threat to ATT's business model, and so they are attempting to take action. My take on this would be that instead of whining about it, ATT should use some of their own spectrum and deploy their own network if they think its that big of a threat. In all honesty they dont actually need to deploy anything as they are the LEC in a good portion of the country, so they already have access to all the customers.

Greed?

Shareholders expect companies to be as profitable as legally possible.

Your 401K or IRA most likely has some AT&T shares... as stock or part of some mutual fund.

Their "greed" => your retirement.

Amazing news!

I can only assume that their position of opposing the Sprint-Clearwire merger means that Bellsouth will be divested, as will Cingular.

Hey AT&T

Why dont you start to compete with business and quit whining all the time. People dont want to hear you whine all the time nor does the public it shows WEAKNESS.

Re: Amazing news!

Technically at&t and it's legal predecessor SBC owned 60% of Cingular from the founding of the company, so that's kind of different...

But yes, it is funny to see at&t of all companies warning of the evils that could be perpetrated by allowing mergers...

I agree that AT&t views the new ClearWire as a threat.

The whining may be related to them having to divest some wireless bandwidth to ClearWire after the Bell South merger, sort of sour grapes.

Re: Hey AT&T

Oh gr8... now can ATAT at least expand their pitiful 3G coverage? Heck, the iPhone 3G is out and 3G is still only available in only a handful of cities. Pathetic... as much as I hate to say it, Sprint's EVDO network just CRUSHES AT&T's 3G in terms of latency, speed and coverage.

Time to market is the point

The issue is when, not if Clearwire becomes a threat to at&t mobility (and potentially DSL). at&t has very savvy state-based government affairs folks who protect their rights. They reward legislative and political prowess as much as technological innovation. Their intent is to stall, because they know that the innovative capabilities of Sprint and Clearwire, with this network, might cause some of their current users to leave and never return (just like they did in droves with local phone service). One can only hope that the FCC can discern truth through their blue and white (or is it black with a tint of red?) lenses.

Well muni-ISP **IS** evil. I live in a city with it and given the choice would prefer that the "City of Gainesville d/b/a GRUnet" not exist.

But for AT&T to be against this sort of merger... well that's just the pot calling the kettle black.

Re: This From AT&T

Perhaps instead of bickering over a merger which would bring 4G network speeds to Sprint subscribers, AT&T should get off it's collective backside and upgrade more of its network to, you know, at least 3G or something.

Just a suggestion, especially considering how much this iPhone thing is getting and how poor the coverage is that people are reporting with it...

(please detect a tinge of facetiousness)

Ahh, a little greasing of the skids in the marketplace of ideas. I guess that could help curry some favor with this board, but isn't it a little wasted?

Really, your message is better targetted by lobbyists to their congress critters.

Hardly changes the fact that anyone with a 401K / IRA is a beneficiary of the evil corporations and their greed.

I am one of the first people to criticize smaller providers for trying to sue instead of deploying their own network to stay competitive, and this is no different. If anyone had an excuse not to deploy, it sure ISN'T ATT. For a company with so many resources (money, spectrum, physical assets, etc.) its downright cowardly for ATT to behave in this manor.
