IE6

My company is still standardized on IE6 and it's Microsoft's fault. Many of the third party application providers that we use need to have IE6 and won't work with IE7 yet. It's Microsoft's fault because they are the ones pushing proprietary web browser components on us and there's nothing I could do about it. So now we're at the mercy of the application developers to update their software to allow for IE7. Home users might be lazy and/or insecure. But for most companies there is a reason why we haven't upgraded to IE7 yet.

However, I also give all of the users at the company the option of using the latest release of Firefox. More and more people are making the switch.

Win2K?

Someone mentioned earlier in the thread that they're running Win98. That OS has reached it's EOL & is, therefore, no longer supported by MS. But what about Win2K? I'm pretty sure that that one still IS supported, yet there was no IE7 made available for it. I know quite a few people (@ home & @ work) that still run 2K. Most of them are using FF as their primary browser.

Ther is one thing firefox is bad with.

Flash en mass. As your number of tabs approches the insane (around 100) firefox starts chocking, flash audio refuses to play and video plays for a few seconds then stops. I don't think its any of the plugins I run (maybe sessionmanager but it uses the internal session saving engine) its annoying but I don't hink most people have this issue.

IE7's one feature of Tabs is a short comming if you have used firefox, there is a way to save your session but it can be wiped out just like opening folders between restarts can be lost too and IE7 CAN NOT open a large numbers of windows or run for days. Once again doesn't effect most people but it also doesn't look good.

Why would one want to have 100 tabs open @ once? I'm lucky if I have a dozen or so open @ any given time on FF3.

old software for the win

windows ME is good too, IE 5.50 is the safest as long as you don't use downloads, javascrip, or active x.. The websites that use these "spyware" tactics, I don't go to them if it doesn't work with a standard browser... IF a website says you need a specific browser version to use this site, there's something wrong with the site.. not following standards and best practices and probly full of bandwidth hogging bloated content with spinning bells and shiny gold whistles etc..

I suggest that all the masses of the world stop updating, stop in your tracks and do not use any new computer device or cellular phone, go back to lan line telephones, spend more time in your garden growing your own food and fight the big corperations that are conspiring to keep you slaves to society.. Every corner you turn, they have added things inplace that you need to upgrade to. In most cases these upgrades have little to do with your personal security.. They mainly have to do with adding ways that they can track info from your computer. Most of the upgraded software requires you to buy new hardware for "compatability issues" so then it becomes a HUGE expense, which is exactly what they wanted. You end up staying poor and they can keep being able to control you and tell you what you need to buy for your computer to work right.... The new software all has swisscheese like holes built in, but only "THEY" have eyes looking in the right direction to see the holes..

Perspective

"A security patch is only good if someone actually downloads and installs it."

And a browser is only good if it works to the user's satisfaction in the first place, security be damned! /sacriledge

Firefox 1.5.0.12 is still doing just fine for me.

Downgraded Firefox 3 back to Firefox 2

I couldn't stand that Firefox 3 implement the zone thing that IE uses. Where it tags files you download as being from the internet zone.. so if you try and open them you get a warning and what not. Drive's me bonkers... I wouldn't of downloaded it, then double clicked on it.. if i wasn't going to open it anyways

needless to say i'm back on firefox 2, but i'm using the latest version of that at least
