Comments on news posted 2008-07-15 12:31:12: A good rule of thumb: when someone claims the Internet is facing bandwidth armageddon, it's usually because they're in the business of designing and selling traffic shaping hardware, trying to justify new and frequently unjustifiable broadband pricin.. ..

New Age

Brings new problems, most people don't appreciate the cost involved in maintaining a network.

quote:
"Complete congestion is a technical fantasy which only exists in the minds of people who do not understand TCP congestion control and how Additive Increase/Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) works in TCP Congestion avoidance works, he says. "AIMD allows a linear growth of bandwidth utilization until loss occurs, at which time an exponential reduction takes place. This slow-start, fast-fallback ensures congestion cannot cause gridlock."

There are two real aspects to consider, those that buy into advertising, yet don't understand how networking is parceled out; all they see is "I want" ~Few are willing to pay, fewer actually pay the bill.

The second is a commodity that in reality, is not managed. Rules applying to end users these days reads like a legal script; not necessary if the networked is managed, in all areas, not just provision, but also usage.

Cable has problems with both managed networks, service and in fact users, who don't have an isolated clue how a network for residential use works.

If somebody wants a real network at a residential level, then they are probably going to continue to piss and moan, but meanwhile pay less than $50.00 for the desired $150-$1,500 service.

For all the complaints on this forum, from users, there are some excellent comments, at the end of the day there are a large number that should simply buy a business level service, as that's what they apparently need and want!

With all due respect Karl, I think you have serious bias here. My response is posted on my blog.

Mute Point.

It doesn't matter how much the bandwith cost's, to some of of us I guess. Don't monitor me, limit me, restrict me. To the cable users, I've used comcast, excellent service, (probably the only one in the neighborhood who had service). I usually prefer DSL (just cause they provide built in firewalls, and no shared speed). What I do not like is the censorship I am seeing on the net l8tly. It's just sad that with so much dark fiber we are even discussing this. Remember fidonet? Connections were not 30.00 a month. Trust me.
