Comments on news posted 2008-03-25 09:14:18: AT&T users over the last week started noticing that they were receiving significantly less spam in their inboxes thanks to a new spam filter. They then started noticing they were receiving significantly less mail, too. ..

Email Munged?

Not to stray off topic, but does anyone have weird issues with Verizon email? We were inserting a URL into our emails and when it would come thru Verizon's email, the URL was changed!! We didn't try AT&T, but virtually every other ISP left the URL untouched. Very frustrating!

same as Comcast

As a comcast user, welcome to the club.

Nothing new for me. As a comcast user, I have spam filtering turned off, yet comcast does not allow some legit email in. Example, for the past few months, I cannot receive emails from redbox (rental and charge card confirmations.) And, comcast won't fix it.

Less Spam

I was wondering why my spam folder was only getting about 5 or so messages per day for the last few days. Prior to that I was getting 50 - 100 per day. I kind of like it

Yahoo also dropping legit mail

Yahoo is also having their problems delivering legit mail. Apparently they've implemented some sort of greylisting. Yahoo is greylisting email and not delivering (bouncing) the email with a 451 "temporarily deferred" error message.

I really like not getting 60+ spam emails a day.

Been lucky so far I am not missing any emails (that I know of)

This has been a problem for me too. I use my att email for all my monitoring services for my servers, and I haven't been getting the status emails.

Re: same as Comcast

You are surprised that Comcast is blocking legitimate commerce from a video competitor?

LOL. Good one!

Next up: Netflix and Blockbuster.

As for this story, it's just the typically incompetent ISP services from the ATT Yahoos. Nothing new here, move along.

Rejected E-mail from improperly configured servers!

Like I stated in an earlier post, the only e-mails being rejected are from mail servers that do not follow the RFC's. They do not have the proper MX and/or A records setup. Anyone setting up a mail server has the responsibility to follow the rules. I'm all for the actions AT&T have taken to help stop spam.

When I implemented the DNS checking on my mail server it blocked 80% of the junk mail.

Mail admins need to do it right or don't do it at all!

Re: Yahoo also dropping legit mail

Well, you won't really know. Both of my main accounts and all but one of seven subaccounts were completely down over the weekend with the mysterious "unexpected server disconnect" error. No POP3 access at all, and webmail had nothing.

They've let the five year olds loose in the datacenter again. Just once I'd like to see them do something right the first time.

You have verification of this? Because right now it looks more like a random crapshoot.

Eaten Mail

I am also experiencing the problem. For those of you that have not noticed the loss of legitimate e-mail: you will have no way of knowing unless your friends or business acquaintances let you know. The problem has been significant for me because e-mail from banks, airlines and educational institutions have been blocked from getting to me. They need to take out the new filters. Getting a box full of spam is better for me than not getting one necessary e-mail. ATT has spent the last ten days trying to tell me I am crazy over and over again. I am glad to find out I am not alone. The next step is to fix it.

Re: Rejected E-mail from improperly configured servers!

I run the same mail server yahoo runs - Zimbra. And I know how it behaves and know what happened when I implemented them DNS checks in my mail server. It shut down a lot of spam plus blocked mail that was coming through that was not spam, just from improperly configured servers. I guarantee you this is what is happening.

One of the most amazing facts was the number of large companies whose IT departments are obviously not up to the challenge of administering their mail servers. When a mail server answers the helo command and it is not what the MX record shows or may not even have an MX or A record, it is rejected. It is such an easy thing to get right and spelled out in the RFC's.

So you are just guessing based on a mistake you made. OK then.

Still waiting for evidence the datacenter is not being run by a bunch of drunken ferrets.

@snet.net

Fortunately, I still have an Earthlink e-mail address

..because when my clients who are using mags.net as their ISP can't send me mail for the past couple of months, I have them resend to my EL address and it comes right through. I've missed countless e-mails in the past 4-5 months with the SBCGLobal.net address of AT&T.

No fan of ATT

But I'll given them thumbs up for at least giving users the option to filter out spam.

No spam filter is perfect and ATT is apparently learning this the hard way.
