1 edit | /// BACKPEDAL ALERT ///
The following exchange is in the comments section of the original article. It is between Comcast VP Kunkel and New Tee Vee columnist Chris Albrecht.
#
Chris,
Your article on Comcast Cameras to Start Watching You portrayed some assumptions that require correction and clarification. I want to be clear that in no way are we exploring any camera devices that would monitor customer behavior.
To gather information for your article on Comcasts exploration of cameras you picked up on my conversation with another conference attendee. The other attendee and I were deep in a conversation discussing a variety of input devices offered by a variety of vendors that Comcast is reviewing.
The camera-based gesture recognition device is in no way designed to or capable of monitoring your living room. These technologies are designed to allow simple navigation on a television set just as the Wii remote uses a camera to manage its much heralded gesture-based interactivity.
We are constantly exploring new technologies that better serve our customers. The goal is simple a better user experience that allows the consumer to get ever increasing value out of their Comcast products.
As with any new technology, we carefully consider the consumer benefits. In fact, we do an enormous amount of consumer testing in advance of making a product decision such as this. Im confident that a new technology like gesture-based navigation will be fully explored with consumers to understand the products feature benefits and of course, the value to the consumer.

Hi Mr. Kunkel,
Just to further clarify. After you granted me our initial video interview, you brought up the topic of Comcast knowing who was in the living room in a conversation between you, myself and another conference attendee.
I actually left and came back to follow up on this point while you were talking with that same attendee. At this point, you were aware that I was a reporter and I took handwritten notes in front of you as we talked to make sure I had an accurate accounting of what you were saying.
Id love to talk further with either you or someone else at Comcast to follow up on this story.

| Makes me wonder Is there anything out there that can detect hidden cameras in your electronics? It looks like big brother is the least of our worries, at this rate we'll have to find ways to keep big business out instead (which is actually harder since I buy all my stuff from him ). | |

| Re: Makes me wonder »www.metacafe.com/watch/553108/de···cameras/ there are many ways to detect hidden cameras but i think people are getting a little paranoid there is no way that comcast or any other company can put a camera in your house without your consent. If they did there would be some serious legal repercussions to be had for show | |

| Comcrap is nuts... ...if they honestly think that anything like this would find wide acceptance.
Still, assuming one does indulge, there are some fun things you could do to screw with them.
(1) Install a pre-printed card in front of the camera at the appropriate distance for it to read the legend 'What are YOU looking at?'
(2) Tape a plastic fly over the lens.
(3) Apply the Handyman's Secret Weapon liberally over the lens.
There's multiple reasons we've stuck with DirecTV. This is only one of them.
Happy travels. | |

Another words my home privacy is off limits to them.this company has no shame and loves to inflict pain on it's costumers

| whats the big deal? i have no problem with this. its not like im doing anything illegal watching tv. id go a step further and allow the govt to monitor its citizens in their homes and vehicles. by doing that the govt could cut down on crime especially domestic violence and possible terrorism. | |

| Re: whats the big deal? big deal is what if you and ur wife or girlfriend or whoever wants to do the horozontal mambo in the frontroom or even the bedroom (almost everyone has a tv in the bedroom too). Better yet you better check ur states and cities definition of what position is allowed because they will come get you if you do something wrong. So again tell me you don't care | |

| If you don't have anything to hide....... If you have nothing to hide, then why should this be a problem? I think the government should also have access to this system. I mean think of the child porn watching comcast could catch & think of all the terrorists that they could catch with this. Again if you have nothing to hide, then what would be the problem with this? | |

| Re: Big Brother is watching you! Think of the positive potential though.
Right now, Nielsens monitor only a couple of thousand people to get some "feedbadck" on who watches what. With this camera thing, Comcast will be able to sell the information to Nielsen and Nielsen will have a far greater input to monitor who watches what.
Now, this puts power into the people.
Once you're setup a fake video signal into the box:
-Feed "baby" images while porn is on. -Feed "adult" images while cartoons are on. -Feed "young teenage girl" image while all the crime/violent shows are on. -Feed "young teenage male" image while some girly "how to knit/cook" programs are on.
In other words, with enough people doing this, you could totally squew the Nielsen statistics and completely change the type of advertising shown on TV. Porn shows would have diaper and Gerber baby food ads, and cartoons would have viagra and tambon/yeast infection ads
