Comments on news posted 2008-03-20 18:33:11: Comcast senior VP of user experience Gerard Kunkel tells New Tee Vee Comcast is experimenting with embedding cameras in your DVR or cable box, allowing the company to know exactly who is watching what, at what time. ..

Time for exercise

'Smith!' screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. '6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me.'

A sudden hot sweat had broken out all over Winston's body. His face remained completely inscrutable. Never show dismay! Never show resentment! A single flicker of the eyes could give you away. He stood watching while the instructress raised her arms above her head and -- one could not say gracefully, but with remarkable neatness and efficiency -- bent over and tucked the first joint of her fingers under her toes.

1984 a la comcast

I'm in no "big to do" about this one as Comcast can't even deliver digital content to my area and I'm less than 8 miles form their office.
I'm wondering most of the time if they could find their collective backsides with two hands a detailed map.
Seriously folks No one is going to allow a camera in their home except maybe some exhibitionist or other deviant.
Hmmm aiding and abetting kiddie porn when your little one is running around the house and refusing to wear their diaper. Comcast has all on record-distributing nude content of minors over the various bands. Ha-Ha maybe its a FBI sting operation pilot program number 2. This replaces the Fake porn url pilot program.

Re: 1984 a la comcast

If they can't keep thier DVR's from crashing, why the hell would they put a camera in it?

This is fucking crazy. I can't believe that Comcast - or ANY company in the U.S. would EVER consider something like this. Our telephones are tapped, DVR recordings looked at, what the hell is next? "Hey.. uh... boss.. why don't we put a video camera inside of the new cable boxes... so that we can... uh... deliver the most important content to the type of customer that is currently watching T.V.?

are they gonna stereotype us too by going Through the looking glass?

if this is created, I'll pickup a new videoBox from my comcast office, plug it in, and the next day, file a lawsuit for illegal monitoring purposes.

Of course, nothing will be done about these invasions of privacy if the next president follows what Dubya Bush has been doing.

I think I'll use an antenna (if there are cameras in that...) when they roll-out this "enhanced" service.

Re: In Soviet Russia...

Digital Video Recorder...

for who? For us to record their T.V.? Or for them to record us?

too bad you won't be able to see what they're recording.

Some perv will hack into comcast when this system is up and running (or get a job there), take the disgusting videos (no one will know that their television is filming them) from the comcast users, post them on YouTube, and a lot of people will lose their jobs over something that they did in private that is nobody's business.

but seriously, what if something illegal is happening in a customer's living room? Just to see what happens, I've tried saying things like "bomb", "Golden Gate Bridge", "Iraq", and something foreign sounding over the telephone during normal conversation. Since that time, i've heard a quiet beeping/ticking noise when I call that person whom I had that experimental conversation with. The U.S. is going to hell, or, at least, the telephone companies.

Do Canadians have to go through any of this shit?

Videophones

Comcast will market it as a videophone service. When you use the unit as videophone, you have privacy. But when the videophone is idle, all bets are off on what comcast will do.

One solution of course, is to buy clothes that have the exact same colour/pattern as the sofa. This way, the camera won't be able to differentiate you from the sofa

Or simply change the camera feed to provide a fixed image of the Griffin family (Family Guy) in front of their TV set. Let Compast compute that !

or the webcams built into their macintoshes

or telephones (some)

or cellphones (that'll suck)

why don't they just broadcast everything that everyone does in a cataloged library so that you can pinpoint your neighbor and watch him/her on the computer?

Orwell was right.

That has to be the stupidest thing i have ever heard of. Talk about an invasion of privacy. I hope someone sues the crap out of them if they try to pull this. On the bright side it probably wouldnt work anyway. No one would allow such an invasion of privacy.

After all, if you've got nothing to hide, let them watch, right?

Smile....Your On Candid Camera!

Think this is a great idea, I don't know what everyone is bitching about. If you have nothing to hide then you shouldn't have a problem with it. As long as you turn on that cable box, you should have no privacy. Privacy is just a figure of speech that has no meaning.

You can have more efficient targeted advertising and to make sure people are actually watching the commercial. If you walk away from the tv during a commercial the commercial will pause. In fact I think it's a good way to sue people for copy infringement for not watching the commercial.

I think the next thing cable companies should do is start shocking people if they walk away from the tv during a advertisement. Not a big charge, just a slight jolt to let you know your breaking the service agreement.

This is to enhance the customer experience. This is a good way to keep cable prices low.

Re: enzyte

The cable box is supposed to be at eye-level.

just imagine that - soon they'll add a weight-management program to the DVR to pause the T.V. every 10 minutes so that you get your exercising in.

The box will pause until it sees your fat middle bounce 30 times; then your program will continue.

It'll probably include a "Parental Control" system, where parents can choose the pause-interval to get their large McDonald's eating children into shape, especially while the children sit down for dinner while they want to watch T.V.

Why don't they develop an iris scanner while they're at it? It'll make sure that no one deletes your copy of The Biggest Loser until you get to watch it during your BurgerTown dinner.

Tail wags dog..?

This is what happens when a company becomes so large that people become numbers to be manipulated for profit.
Customer privacy & security take a backseat to the junior genius in Marketing who comes up with an idea to increase revenue by a few percentage points.
Shame on you Comcast, shame on you!

I believe it. I don't believe the Comcast exec's attempt to backpedal (see comments in the linked article).

That said, the article at first sounded like these are in the field. Clearly, it had not gone that far.

Meanwhile, I think this whole episode has saved them any further R&D dollars on this technology.

Thanks Rob, I just finished reading your post /// BACKPEDAL ALERT /// and was hoping to eat some crow.
Sadly enough, it still seems that Comcast gave this more than a passing thought.
Let's see if the anonymous coward has anything else to add.
