Advertised rate ain't the point

You don't get the advertised data rates on cable now, except maybe in short bursts early in the morning. The 50-50 noise is so much marketing crapola. You may find a speed test that shows you getting some double-digit-megabit bursts but just do the math: multiply the customer count by the bandwidth and ask your provider just what size pipe they connect to their upstream peering point with. No way are they buying enough OC-3s or whatever hose they hook to so that an appreciable portion of their customers can eat 50mb regularly. Don't these big numbers come at the expense of bonding several RF 'channels" together - eating more of their coaxial real estate? There's no such thing as a free byte.

Re: Advertised rate ain't the point

If Comcast goes all Digital, it will free up A LOT of their Coaxial real estate and, with the DOCSIS 3.0 standard, more than Four channels can be used for upstream/downstream bandwith. Where we live for example, the analog channels are also simulcast in digital for digital cable customers with a Set Top Box or CableCard. There are about ~70~ analog channels; in total they take up 420 Mhz of bandwith. if they were to take 35 channels for downstream and 35 for upstream, theoretically, Comcast could offer speeds of 1.4 Tbps down, and 1.05 Tbps up ! Plus, upgrade to 1Ghz, SDV, and MPEG-4, there is the potential for even faster speeds!
