it's true

I'll vouch for Cox being shorthanded...
was at the local office the other day and heard the guy next to me be told "we're out" of DVRs... Needless to say, the guy was disappointed... Guess I'm glad to have one already

Guess this shortage kind of proves people kind of like these magic time machine boxes, even if they aren't shiny "tivos"

Ask the Techs

I recently ordered Verizon FiOS TV service. I was only given the option for a standard box, even though I needed an HD.

When the tech arrived, I asked if he had one available and he did. Score one for me!!

Verizon should choose more than one vendor.

By limiting yourself to one vendor you open yourself up to stuff like this. They need more than one box manufacturer to ensure supply is sufficient.

That is the way to solve the problem. Obviously, Motorola, which lately can't do anything right, has problems building and supplying these sets to all the ISPs. The only solution is to give contracts to other builders. I am sure they can ramp up factories in China pretty quickly if several ISPs give contracts to other companies.

 Coworker Experienced Fios Delay

...He told me he has Fios, loves it. Wanted to exchange one of the regular STB's he has for a HD DVR. He called Verizon, they told him it was a very long wait.

I told him "hang on, let me check my info", (meaning come here to DSLReports). Sure enough, after a quick look in the forums here, mid-March looks like the date that he can get one.

I wish

It sure would be nice if they would allow a more open system in which you could buy a DVR yourself (other than TIVO obviously) and not have to worry about renting a neutered DVR that doesn't even let you take full advantage of what it's capable of. Sure would be nice to be able to use the HDMI port on the DVR I rent from Cox! And man wouldn't it be nice to expand your hard drive capacity by simply utilizing the USB ports and adding an external hard drive?

I guess with the amount of money they collect in rental fees coupled with the virtual monopoly position that they enjoy that it will never happen though.

Heck, they even stick it to you when you buy TIVO because you have to rent 2 cable cards to use the dual tuner option. Not only that, but they also take away On-Demand services too.

Don't think this was a Motorola problem, more a Verizon/cox not placing an order far enough ahead.
If you anticipate the need (driven by there own advertisements) for a "Boatload" (this scales far above the the usual forklift or truckload upgrade) you need to place a firm order with the Mfg.
Motorola isn't in the position to build/warehouse millions of units, and sit on them hoping someone will place a big order.
It's a side effect of lower margins/just in time Mfg strategies .. sometimes it's not just in time.

Re: I wish

I don't know if Cox markets are different (other than the service offerings as far as HSI plans, TV channel line-ups, etc.), but the Cox HD DVR that I had up until the 26th of last month (before switching to DirecTV), worked with my HDMI cable hands down.

I heard from the DirecTV guy that even their HD DVR boxes sometimes have trouble recognizing the HDMI cables, so he typically sets up the regular RCA-type cables to the box first and then uses HDMI if available.

D'uh - Oh!

I wonder if the same production manager is in charge of these who was in charge of Apple CPU production.

It's my understanding the areas that use Motorola boxes, can't use any other types because of the encryption.

Must be nice...

Must be nice for all the Cox folks who have Motorola. In the OKC market, we're still stuck with crappy Scientific Atlanta HD boxes that only work part time and have incredibly crippled features.

Despite the shortage, motorola markets at least have the hope of getting something that works. We've been told that cox has no plans around here to change away from SciAtl.

The Panasonic boxes are fully interchangeable in Motorola areas.

I know!! I can't believe TIVO isn't two way capable, allowing On-Demand service to work.

Motorola DVRs on Ebay

Ebay has some listed. Maybe VZ and Cox should start bidding.

The Best solution is free market for the customer

and be dependent on any 1 cable set top box manufacturer..

I would love to be able to choose between, Sony, tivo, motorola etc. for my STB.

The sooner this comes to reality the better.

I had no trouble getting a Motorola box from Time Warner. Maybe they bought them all up?
