Already covered over at Slashdot

Slashdot covered this a few days ago. It's not the drives that prevent sharing of data. It's the MioNet software that's included with the drive that prevents the file sharing. MioNet is basically VPN-line software that allows remote access to your files.

Don't buy Western Digital Hard Drives

Or for that matter any hard drives distributed in US. Order overseas and have shipped if this is an issue for you.

IT is for me because what I do with my hard drive is my business. If I want to break the law than that is my choice to make, not Western Digitals.

There are also some legal uses that this technology might prohibit. No thanks, will stay away from WD.

Sad thing is most people buy their computer pre-assembled so how will you know?

While I agree with you, the US judicial system doesn't quite. See references to Napster, Limewire, Grokster, Bittorrent, et al.

I agree. I spend my cash on something, I will use it how I please and no software would stop me.

Agreed! Consumer trust is gone.
Western Digged their own grave with this treachery as far as this buyer's dollars are concerned.

Let me get this straight

They are shipping the drives with pre-installed software on them. So, shouldn't you just do what I do with any new drive and FORMAT it?

That's what I was thinking. No one says you HAVE to use the included software.

Couple of comments to be made here:

1. The reason why you wouldn't format a western digital world drive, is because therefore it is no longer a world drive, rather just a extremely expensive USB hard drive.
2. Western Digital, consider this a boycott, I have bought close to 25 drives from you (I have 19 computers), and they should not think for one minute that I won't move to an inferior product just to boycott them.
3. All of these restrictions are bound to catch them, as soon as the very consumers and companies that buy their product realize their crippling effect on a product that is unrestricted.
4. Movie Companies: You realize, because you say I can't, I most definitely will!

Need an uncorrupted somewhat knowledgeable congress man soon!

Good point, however if you get one of those pre-built PCs and the main drive is a WD then well, you could be in a pickle if you don't know what you are doing or don't know how a computer really works. Unfortunately for the most part people who buy pre-built PCs fall in that category.

The sad thing is that I used to be a loyal WD guy and I would recommend WD drives to people. But now Seagate looks so much better and from now on I am going to recommend Seagate. It's a good company that has been making hard drives for as long as WD. In fact, my next computer build is gonna have dual 500GB SATA Seagate drives.

No kidding, I bought a Seagate External 500GB and almost 2 years later it's still kicking.

I think my internal is also a Seagate.

Wanna bet this'll boost their stock?

Network

It seems that the block function part of the software that allows access via the internet. Format the Drive, Don't access the drive via the internet or best of all DON'T BUY the drive in the first place.

Don't forget that...

...this only applies to their external network drive product and only affects off-network file sharing (through the web).

There will likely not be any such restrictions implemented into internal hard drives or plain USB external drives. It simply would be impossible to implement such restrictions at the hardware level without cooperation from the software layer (operating system).

I believe this only applies to external HDs. Either way I am done buying anything WD.

Software

It's just the software, don't install the sofware..simple as that.

I buy a hardrive that performs well, saying never to buy WD ever again is ignorant.

WD stills perform better than Seagate, even their latest 7200.11 series

Re: Unacceptable

I own 3 WD My Books. The drives come with some software to share the files easier and junk but I just format the drive and make a network share.

Just don't use the software and you are fine.
