1 edit | It's about time, & this is coming from a former cable guy Any business would kill for the margins (profits) of the cable companies.
Clustering has actually prevented competition, but granted, has brought more services to many formerly underserved areas by interconnecting them.
By the way, overbuilding never works, unless you get some nutty rogue operator. Their end game is usually to become such a thorn in the side of the incumbent, that the big company will eventually buy them out.
The only hope is competition from the phone company... but that only makes a duopoly. And who's gonna trust the phone company??
My personal choice is the Fios bundle, or satellite coupled with cable broadband, the best of both worlds (if that can be economical).

| Regulation The tide has turned. Telco's have been highly regulated since the beginning and Cable hasn't. Now they will have to go thru the same crap the telco's have had to endure. Just be ready VOIP will the next thing to be taxed, the government will always get their money. | |

Now break up AT&T, and this time amend the constitution to make it illegal for them to even THINK about merging together again!

| Seen it before -- ILEC vs CLEC Haven't we seen this before? This reminds me of when CLECs were given more opportunity by the FCC to use the incumbent's telephone lines for DSL. Take a look at the market for CLECs today. Few CLECs exist (definitely not as many as when there were saner FCC rules) and competition with ILECs is still very very tough. | |

| FCC Power Grab
The 1984 Cable Act's 70/70 provision was designed to counteract Cable's market power if it were to reach the 70% level. However, to justify their action, the FCC has to include the telephone company's Fiber Optic TV subscribers in order to reach the 70% threshold. Strange that the FCC is using evidence of competition to justify regulation. More on my blog at »ikeelliott.typepad.com/telecosm/···ry-.html
