A word to the wise......

It might behoove people to NOT sign up for these "cheap", long term deals from any of these companies just to save a few extra pennies over paying monthly.

I still see people who may have just lost their money asking about and being told to go and do the same thing with some other service. Once burned....

I saved my SunRocket number with an immediate port out!

So before I came to SunRocket, I was a VoiceEcipse subscriber. »www.voiceeclipse.com/

I called up this company wanting to port my number back and I found something pretty interesting. The tech said in a round-about way that VoiceEclipse (or its parent company PAETEC) was an underlying carrier for SunRocket.

They looked up my phone number and confirmed that my number was one they were providing underlying service to. (I'm in the Chicagoland area but apparently they provided service to SunRocket all across the U.S.)

Needless to say, I got my number up and going with these guys in about an hour using my PAP2.

It's probably worth a checking into if you can't afford to lose your number like myself.

Sunrocket help!

I paid in money order total amount of $208.63 for a BOGO 2yr plan with sunrocket. However, I understand Viatalk is offering contract buyouts of sunrocket customers. So does this mean more cash out of pocket for signing up with another company? I was not aware that SR had issues. I just know my service went down and tried calling CS and recieved the "not taking any phone calls" spiel. I am concerned that if someone is offering a contract buyout, shouldn't it be indicated if it is complete buyout or just a partial. Please clarify.

8x8 to Take Over SunRocket Accounts

Just posted on WSJ.com

8x8 to Take Over SunRocket Accounts
By SAMAR SRIVASTAVA
July 17, 2007 3:58 p.m.

Internet phone company 8x8 Inc. is in talks to take over subscriber accounts from SunRocket, a start-up carrier that ceased operations Monday, abruptly cutting off service from some 200,000 subscribers, according to people familiar with matter.

Sherwood Consultants, a California firm handling the "wind down" of SunRocket is in discussions with 8x8, which sells a phone service called Packet8, a person familiar with the talks said. He declined to elaborate what is being discussed or whether 8x8 would honor existing SunRocket contracts.

"Time is of the essence," the person said. "The risk we face is that subscribers will go elsewhere."

Other phone companies also are interested in taking over the accounts from SunRocket, of Vienna, Va., including the company that provides Internet phone service under the ViaTalk brand.

Some customers whose home phone service has been cut off are taking action on their own to switch providers. VoicePulse Inc., a New Jersey based Internet calling provider, says it has already had a few thousand former SunRocket customers sign up for its service in the past 24 hours. "They've been contacting us to port their numbers," said Voice Pulse CEO Ravi Sakaria. Mr. Sakaria declined to say how many customers VoicePulse has, but noted it is smaller than SunRocket.

Re: 8x8 to Take Over SunRocket Accounts

Nice! P8 has a pretty good rep. I wonder what they're actually going to offer. Honoring my plan entirely would be great.

Interesting to see the WSJ usurp broadbandreports.com on this newsbit though. Obviously, the disgruntled folks don't have as much access to whoever is left.

Number Porting

I am getting mixed messages all over the place. I have a number that Comcast owns, ported from them last October. They told me that the numbers will be relased back into general population in 30 days. Verizon and AT&T said that the numbers can not be ported because they are "locked out" and gone. Nuvio gaurantees they can port the numbers. It sounds like other VoIP companies are stating the same thing, like ViaTalk, 8x8, etc.

Any word on what is REALLY happening to my phone numbers that I have had for 10 years? Am I (and everyone else) screwed out of our numbers because we wanted to save a few bucks?

Off topic: What of 911 service? Like the airlines: wouldn't "the government" step in here for 200,000 people losing phone service over night?

Re: sunrocket

We did the same thing. We had purchased the 15 months at $244.06 total (with taxes and miscellaneous charges) about 28 days before the plug was pulled by Sunrocket, and we obviously couldn't reach them to exercise our rights under their "no questions asked" warranty. Our number never ported, and we never put through a call or received a call (in fact, I had tried to cancel and the CSR talked me out of it).

Capital One did reverse the charges, but this month, we had to pay them. Capital One says because they cannot collect from the merchant, we owe the money. Looks like that's true. Many of you may be getting charge-backs if other credit card companies have the same policies as Capital One.

Guess what credit card won't be in my wallet any longer?

@rr.com

I guess I am one of the "lucky" ones

The third year of my annual plan was up on July 26th, so at least I got what I paid for, almost the full 2 years of prepaid service. Up until last night, I have never had any complaints with the service.

Printed my invoice and any info I could off the customer site, and switched to a *shrug* landline. Like other posters my wife freaked out, and it’s the end of anything cool for me.

So now I wait 2 weeks for bell south, the new AT&T, to connect in. They have a special for people moving from other phone companies of 18 bucks a month. Sure this doesn’t include unlimited long distance, but that’s what the cell phone is for.

For those who have ViaTalk...

Does their service work with sending faxes and Tivo boxes? I know ViaTalk has a $9.99/mo fax line option, but I just want to be able to fax out of the regular line once in a while.

My Sunrocket has been able to fax out if I set my fax to "international mode", and my Tivo (technically a Dish Network VIP 622) has been able to dial out without problems. Will they work on ViaTalk?

Sunrocket

My Sunrocket service died on the 17th at about 4 PM. After reading that Sunrocket went belly up I called Vonage. They are waiving the setup fee and giving Sunrocket orphans 2 months for free. A free Gizmo as well and you pay the shipping charges.

I grabbed the deal and am now praying that I don't get screwed again.

I called my bank for the one month that I just paid to Sunrocket using my Visa Check Card and the bank charged them back at once.

Don't mess around ... call your bank NOW.

I paid $200 on a Bank of America debit card in January for the 2-for-1 deal and assumed it was too late to dispute. WRONG! Just got off the phone with Bank of America who credited me back $150 of the $200 (pro rated) while the charge is being disputed.

So I called my credit union (Safe) and was told that even under the circumstances, they will not investigate after 60 days. Sucks because the charge was on 4/1/07. When I asked what other options I had, they said to call the Better Business Bureau...

At any rate... hello Vonage. May your service last longer than 3 months...

I decided on TB. Low money risk, evidence so far shows that they have the closest link with SR's existing infrastructure. I hope they can pull it off!

I"m really getting the run around. I started the effort to transfer/port my sunrocket number(I have had for two years) to comcast's Digital voice. This was begun on the 21st of July. Was to be completed on the 8th of August(don't know why so long when company is dead). Learned today(8/7/2007) that comcast provisioning claims SunRocket has not released the number and claim to never have received the request. Comcast initialed the request again and whoever is controlling SR's numbers said that it will take 15 days to complete the transaction. Why?

I also learned that comcast can do nothing until SR releases the number. Who is controlling the numbers? SR is Dead.

Need some help somebody.
