Why the USDA

why the USDA has become the catch all for all things "rural" is beyond me

P.S. I wish someone would take a look at that thing called food stamps

What? The executive branch funneling money away from people who need it, into the coffers of the wealthy? Unthinkable!

Technically food stamps don't exist any more. they use a credit card looking thing.

Think about who dwells out in the middle of nowhere. There are farmers. There are wealthy Hollywood types who own palatial rural getaways. And there's the occasional hermit.

The hermits don't want the utilities, and the wealthy don't deserve the subsidies. Who does that leave?

The tens of millions of other regular lower or middle-class Americans who live in rural communities?

Much too easy an answer and idealogically impure, citizen. Please adjust your quotation to better reflect the pure thought of Chairman Rand.

Nah, the only broadband he likely knows about is something like the The Lennon Sisters. On the other hand, some of his political appointees should be fair game in this.

My friend is neither a farmer, a hermit or a hollywood type. Quit posting ignorant things.

What? Congress levies billions in new taxes and then wastes the money? Unthinkable!

Ok I think I got it

These people use our tax dollars to help the rural middle to lowclass people to get broadband but instead they funnel the money to the rich rural people instead

Couldn't understand...

...why some communities were eligible, as this article shows. I know of nearby 'rural' communities that are eligible, even though they are close enough to a metropolitan area to have something like 3-5 broadband providers. Go figure!

It is not just broadband

The exact same thing happened with the rural health clinics programs. The clinics ended up in suburbs.
The definitions on which these programs are based need to change.

I live in what you term 'the middle of nowhere'. And I DO NOT fit any of your ignorant sterotypes listed above. If fact, none of my neighbors fit your sterotyping.

my parents still on dial-up

Yes, my parents are still on dial-up. Only option is satellite.

I would love to see rural america get broadband. It really sucks for them right now.

Re: Why the USDA

OK, troll, here's a brief and incomplete list:
Farmers
Bankers who loan the farmers money
Teachers who teach the Bankers kids
Dentists who fix the Teacher's teeth
Grocers who sell the Dentists food
Accountants who do the Grocers taxes

Etc, etc...

About the only thing missing (or less prevalent) in rural areas are smarmy asses who look down on people who don't live in their neighborhood...

 What do you people expect?!?

Gee, the Federal government let politics dictate where the money would go instead of actual need? Unthinkable! That's never happened before...

...what's that you say? The USF? Well, yeah, there's that... AND ALMOST EVERY OTHER SUCH PROGRAM THEY TOUCH.

But hey, never mind that! We need a National Broadband Policy administered by the Federal Government! This time it'll be different! Really! Our problems will be solved!

/sarc

It never ceases to amaze me how people witness time and again the Federal government act in a wasteful, politically-driven manner on matters that would be better handled locally, yet they insist on yet MORE, not less Federal government intervention on everything from broadband service to what gets played on the radio.
