Comments on news posted 2007-01-18 09:33:49: Last June, we mentioned how one woman couldn't get AOL to cancel her mother's account after she died, a support rep telling the woman her deceased mother would have to call in and cancel the account herself. ..

The Ex-Wife Clause

I did cable CS for a while, and we sometimes called this idea the ex-wife clause.
About once a month, more around the football playoffs, a female would call in (sometimes a male) and claim that their spouse had died. They normally had the social security number and everything, would claim the phone had already been cutoff, and give themselves as the executor of the estate with a new phone number. They would insist they did not watch TV and did not want to keep the account open.
Cable does not ask for a death certificate normally, though in some situations (like the occasional 12 month contract) we did. When we didn't, inevitably, a few days later, a male would call in irate that their cable was cut off, and even more irate to find that their account information had been removed. And then we would find out he wasn't dead, but he was recently divorced.

He's DEAD Jim!

I'd tell SPRINT to piss off and that they should not expect any more money because the deceased is currently unable to generate a pulse much less the income to pay the bill. I'd say that no other person is responsible for the account other than the individual who signed the contract. And so let them sue the Estate...and that should be their last and final clue that the account should be cancelled and they're not going to get any more money.

I bet if you came back and haunted them they would cancel it. Well, maybe.

Re:Billing The Dead

I had the experience of contacting sprint in regards to my brother after he passed away suddenly.

I was offered by one rep to cancel the account right then, or at the end of the billing cycle. I choose to cancel at the end of the billing cycle.

Sprint asked if anyone in the family may want to keep the plan, as it was a "good plan" from retentions.

A few days later, the service was disconnected (early) and when I called in, they said it was requested for the earlier date (it wasn't) and the reminded me that they would need a copy of the death certificate plus the obit from the newspaper.

After a bit of laughing at the rep, I told sprint i'd be happy to offer one or the other, but requesting both was unnecessary. They then said to forget sending anything and canceled the account with no ETF at the end of the billing cycle. They apologized for my families loss and suggested since he left no estate (had no bank accounts or property he owned) that we might just "forget" to pay the last bill. My mother paid the bill anyways.

The electric and gas companies just needed a call to say that the customer had passed away. I believe they can access records in most areas to see that a death certificate had been issued in their customers name. They sent one final bill each, and nothing after that.

As stated above, sprint is well within their legal rights to request some proof of death. They will happily terminate the service so long as you have the deceased customers SSN number, account level password, etc. Since I had done most of the calling for my brother, I had his password. Any family that is still paying for a service for the deceased needs to just send a death certificate copy to the company's legal dept and demand the service be terminated as the customer is dead. If both parents are dead and they want to talk to "her husband" or "his wife" about it, send them a death certificate for the spouse also!
