Why does this keep reminding me of Waterworld?

Everytime I read about Sealand I think about Dennis Hopper and the 'Smokers'

Crazy...

It's amazing to me that TPB has the organization and/or capital to do something like this.

You'd almost think they're a legitimate organization rather than a bunch of criminals...

some business people wear white and some wear black....i'd bet most of them used to wear white and got tired of the government sticking up their arse and switched to the darker side.

i think they just know what they are doing and are dodging pending legal stuff by this action. it will take the government years to write bogus laws to get them at sea. by this time, if not already, they will be filthy rich and won't care what happens beyond that.

Done before

Actually the cable-cut problem has cropped up in the past at Sealand. It's the reason a Napster haven never sprang to life: Not much use for a data haven with no connectivity.

That brings up the real problem with buying an island and declaring yourself a nation: Nations can protect themselves, or they quickly become part of OTHER nations. Sealand (or Pirate Bay, etc.) can claim all they want. They'd quickly suffer Cheap Suit Syndrome when more established nations come calling.

Re: Crazy...

What's your definition of a 'criminal'. Is a criminal someone who disobeys the law? Well, they aren't breaking any laws where they are. Is a criminal someone who breaks US laws? Ahh, in that case, then I guess YOU'RE a criminal too, because you have broken the taliban's laws.

They ARE a legitimate organization. Maybe not legitimate in your eyes, but you don't think allofmp3 should exist either. Hate to break it to you, but the US is only 5% of the world population, and about 90% of the non-us peoples DON'T particularly like us.

They don't. That is why they have started a web site begging for money to join their criminal organization.

Yup. If Sealand even has broadband. If it doesn't, good luck laying fiber out to there and raising the money for it. Don't forget enough power to run it also...

Avoid cable issues, buy a satellite.

The piratebay just needs to launch a satellite. It is really silly anyways considering that there is nothing illegal about their site. They just have a web site full of links.

Well its 7 miles from the coast, so a wireless link could easily work. Also a couple of wind turbines and power wouldn't be an issue.

I bow to your humility. Having lived in 4 different countries and 3 different continents for studying, I've seen and heard many different things, however your last statement is absolutely accurate and is one of the only common mentality between all those places...

You get +100 cool points from me.

Theft is theft, regardless of whether one has the balls to admit it or not. Those without balls hide behind mature and well developed excuses like "those laws are stupid..."

Truly amazing...
