Comments on news posted 2006-11-23 14:21:29: Amazon ran a special promotion this week but under-estimated the demand for the product from users with fast connections. At exactly 2pm EST, the offer was open (an Xbox core system at less than half-price). ..

Come on kids - you are embarassing yourselves

There were 10's of thousands, 100's of thousands or millions of folks trying to get 1,000 units. You knew you had no chance and the fact that you didn't get one means what... you have $100 more now then you would have had you gotten lucky. Go play the lottery for a year on that $100 and you probably have a better shot at winning something.

Whining doesn't become you.

Re: Come on kids - you are embarassing yourselves

Lets say it was 500,000 ppl trying. Thats one in 500 chance. Thats about a million times better than buying a lottery ticket.
Even $100 worth of lottery tickets is a very stupid investment. Many people play the lottery weekly for thier whole lives and dont win the lottery. You have about as much chance of winning the lottery as getting struck twice by lightning.

That's NO chance once the servers are borked in the first nanosecond.

And then to complain about it, as if no one saw this coming....

I dont understand why you are defending amazon in like 500 different posts. Not making enough bandwidth available to handle a mad rush like that was inexcuseable. As for people reading the directions, I'm sure very few people did it, and there shouldn't need to be directions to buy a discounted item.

Get your head out of the sand.

Re: Come on kids - you are embarassing yourselves

Who's defending Amazon? Amazon is a site like any other. Was their some gun at your head to go to it? For a whole whopping 3 mins of your life you tried to get a kick ass deal on something and didn't. Who cares if the site wasn't responsive to you. It obviously was responsive to 1000 lucky folks. Sour grapes you didn't get one - think so.

Ever try to get concert tickets for a hot concert when it goes on sale?

Ever try to get say a PS3 at launch by walking up to a store and getting one?

Get real!!!

Entire site down for minutes

Way to go Amazon.

The entire site was dead for 8 minutes. Someone's going to have fun explaining that to the boss.

Good news: we sold 1000 xboxes.
Bad news: we didn't sell anything else.

Actually I imagine if they did sell 1000 units of Xbox 360s in 10 minutes, that's probably better than your typical 10 minutes at Amazon.

Screwed by Scamazon.com Too.

Today was one of the worst customer service experiences that I have ever had with a business. I doubt that I will ever do business with Amazon.com again unless they offer some concellation to disgruntled customers.

Re: Screwed by Scamazon.com Too.

Why are you a disgruntled customer?

If you don't win the lottery, do you expect your state to provide you with some consolation?

They sold a 1000 units and made a 1000 folks very happy. Anyone that feels cheated has unrealistic expectations. Do you feel cheated if you happened to be away from your computer during a good WOOT Off?

What about limited quantities at any advertised sale for a retailer.

Maybe you should sue... that will make you feel better. I'm sure there's some ambulance chaser that would take your money to represent you.

Why should you be entitled to something which you neither earned nor deserve. You should be happy you have clothes on your back and a full belly. There are people with much less who are much happier than you. What selfish pitiful creature you are.

I got one...

I was on Amazon refreshing 10-15 minutes before 2pm EST. I really had no problem for some reason until after I got the confirmation I'd got one. Then the server died at checkout. Good thing I had until tomorrow to redeem the code.

If you guys think this is bad, you should have been trying to get a PS3 at Costco.com last week.

Re: I got one...

Yeah - but I would have hoped Amazon's servers would have held up a bit better than this.

FWIW, I Actually got one of those Costco.com PS3 bundles - got it in my "cart" at 7:50am CST and kept drilling away, getting through the checkout around 1:45p CST after what looked like their site having had a complete melt-down & crash.

Their site at least put up a "go away" and/or error page. Amazon effectively went off the net.

I think Costco had more of a problem with the servers and/or application handling the load at checkout. Amazon appears to have not been able to handle the raw bandwidth of what amounts to a DDOS attack by there own customers.

good deal

I refreshed at exactly 11 and page finished loading about 3-5 minutes later to an expected sold out notice. I already have two 360s' so I went for the $60 Mongoose instead. Bike is paid for and on its way home

Of Course

Yes I tried to by using the refresh button in IE7 several times starting at 10:55am pst just in case Amazon's servers clocks were not set right. Well I won't go into much more detail but like everyone else the page would no longer load so I gave up at 11:02am. Remember they had 1,000 units and probably 10,000 plus people trying to access the page all at the same time. They need more severs and more bandwidth. It will be interesting to see if they have the same problems again as each week will be another item at a blowout price, i don't recall how many weeks it will be going on for. Anyway, I sure would've liked to have gotten my hands on the 360. One thing for certain, I'll probably never own a PS3 because I refuse to pay that kind of money. In fact I won't even pay the regular price for a 360 either. Now the Wii is different, I'll buy one of those once they are easier to get.

Re: Of Course

10,000? hahhahaah that is quite low.
There were 25,000 posts in the discussion forum amazon had linked on the page for that item to calibrate thier time (see what time they posted). And that was a single thread. There were a dozen other threads with 1000-2000 posts in them with same purpose. So thats MINIMUM of 50,000 people who posted to calibrate thier time.

Considering that most people trying to get this didn't post (you probably didn't even realize there was a discussion thing since amazon disabled them from that page a few minutes before the deal happened since it was slowing them down, not that it helped), that means its quite an easy estimate that there were at least 500,000 people trying to get this.

I doubt it was thier bandwidth that was the problem, although that probably would have helped. It was the sheer number of http requests that overwhelmed whatever server farm they have.
You can confirm the bandwidth by looking at the reply from a previous guy about https

I'm sure many of those people posted more than once, so that's flawed logic. There was still a ton of traffic, though.

Re: Of Course

Why would anyone post more than once in a time calibration post thread? You post, see what time it claims you posted, compare that to the time on your computer, and then you are set.
Those threads I was mentioning were ALL "time calibration" threads, there were other threads that people were actually discussing the deal in.

Got one of the bikes!

I was on my computer with three different browsers (Firefox, Opera, Safari) and was constantly refreshing, but I never got through. My wife was on her laptop just using Firefox. The Xbox was sold out, but she was able to get one of the bikes, which we wanted, too.

I'd rather get a Wii, anyway (but would have taken an Xbox for $100)!

Amazon Outage as reported by the Associated Press

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061124/ap_···n_outage

Snippet from the article...
"We saw dramatically more traffic than what we anticipated," Amazon spokesman Craig Berman said Friday.

The Xbox sold out in 29 seconds, Berman said. Amazon also sold out of discounted Mongoose mountain bikes, Barbie dolls and Amazon Prime memberships with $100 gift certificates in about 15 minutes.

It's really a silver lining - great max load demo?

That big boy, Amazon, knocked down for "only" 10 minutes?

Seems like a blessing in disguise, to me.
So long as it is not soon repeated.

Now the grunts / IT people (at Amazon and elsewhere) have a real life case that demonstrates a maxed out, gargantuan overload and the effects even on a bona fide heavy weight.

Better future attention to balancing massive capacity versus massive demand issues?

Much to the benefit of Amazon (incl. EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud)) and other similar big boys?

Confirmed Success?

Is there anyone out there that has a confirmed success of receiving the xbox at the $100 price tag? If so, I don't understand how they could've possibly done it.

No Purchases!

It was complete bull. I doubt they sold any, if not maybe 5. At least person posting here would likely have gotten one. It's bologna.

Re: No Purchases!

I came pretty close. I was refreshing as fast as I could before 1 PM Central, but it really started slowing down the last 10 minutes. At 12:58, I decided to let my refresh complete rather than start a new one.

The screen to buy one came up at about 1:01. I hit the button and waiting another 2-3 minutes. Unfortunately, the "real person" verification screen surprised me, and I hesitated about 15 seconds before entering the correct number (for me it was 18+12) and clicking on the checkbox.

When the next screen finally came up, the product was sold out.

Really... $100 for the Core still isn't that great of a deal

... once you add in the hard drive, the HD cables, the wireless remote, etc. that you need to actually enjoy the thing. Just bite the bullet and get the Premium XBox 360 system for $399... and go enjoy life.
