Works for me!

No room for companies claiming they are not sending spam.

User didn't request it your a spammer.

do it.

yes, I would expect companies to dislike it but it's a simple solution.

really, this would be one of the simplest ways to eliminate spam.

Honk Kong citizens can read minds....it's a fact!

I guess Hong Kong is full of people who can read other people's minds.

Lets see....I think Chang is going to send me an email, so I better request it first so that it's not considered spam. But wait a minute, doesn't Chang first have to request my request before I can send it? Better phone him instead.

This is from someone that does not understand the medium (internet).

If it is from Ching Fong Song to Jin Du Ton, it is okay. If it is from a BUSINESS, it isn't. It directly says "solicitations" not personal emails.

A unified Challenge/Response system is the only way to go

There needs to be a unified agreement on a challenge/response system. This is the only true way to combat spam, IMHO.

If you send an email to somebody you haven't previously sent an email to, you have enter some sort of challenge code to get through, otherwise the email is rejected. Once you do that once, you are whitelisted and you can send emails any time you want from that one address. Spammers don't have the resources to type in millions of millions of challenge codes.

I LIKE!

If I order a product from you, you are entitled to send me an e-mail to confirm my order, send me an email to update me on my order, and send me an e-mail to thank me for my order. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to e-mail me every day to let me know what "deals" I will be getting from ordering from you (ahem drugstore.com!)

I don't know, if you don't common sense one almost does not feel sorry for someone getting spam.

The root of the problem is stopping bulk emailers itself.

Wow!

Nice idea BUT enforcement of this will be uneven in almost the same way DRM technology is..

With DRM, we have average folks suffering disproportionately with DRM-laden goods they've purchased legitimately. Those that know enough to circumvent, circumvent.

With this spam measure, companies that don't hide behind zombified proxies will suffer while the true spammers will continue to spam... beyond the reach of any enforcement.

Still, there are a number of legit companies that seem to think it's a good idea to send weekly newsletters, etc. This needs to stop... or, at least, it needs to be done on the basis of the tried/true double opt-in standard for receiving that newsletter... not simply because a customer once ordered something. Isn't this is small potatoes, though?

I don't know about everyone else's inboxes or spam traps but the volume of inane newsletters/etc sent from companies I do business with is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what spamassassin diverts in the form of offers for cheap viagra, etc.

One can wish

Wish they had that bill here but of course they don't. Over here they leave the door open half way. I read the article and was amazed how they defend sending people spam.

A prior business realtionship means you can send emails about what the person bought, recalls and warnings. It don't mean you send emails about everything else under the sun.

the best part... a "do call" list

the best part of that article was at the bottom, IMO...
And, in a sign the legislation may still need to undergo massive rewriting, the Consumer Council condemned the bill's very staple - a proposal for a territory-wide "do not call" register under which individuals can sign up to request a block on all unsolicited mobile text messages, faxes or pre-recorded phone calls. Instead, council chief executive Pamela Chan Wong-shui said businesses should only be allowed to send messages to citizens who register under a "do call" list.
Imagine that... a "do call" list!
