Arent most tmobile hotspots at Starbucks? Dont you have to pay something absurd like $20 a month to use said hotspots? Sounds very fishy to me!!

That is how it started out. However, I have their $20/mo data plan and they're now letting these users make use of the Tmo Hotspot network any day of the week. |

Basicly now all you need is a hotspot at work and home. Talk all day and night on tmobile. The regular cellular network will take up the in-between areas. This is going to be a great product provided, they allow you to plug your home phone into it. hello Vonage....

They're also at FedEx Kinko's and one of the big bookstores--either B&N or Borders, I can never remember. They currently have free weekends for T-mobile users including prepaid subscribers. From the looks of it they'll likely only be giving hotspot voice access to anyone with a UMA plan, and that'll most likely be included in the monthly service cost. Just my guess.

That's not quite correct. The way it works is, you add the UMA calling feature to your regular cell plan. ...and of course, to use that feature, you need to be in the range of a hotspot...initially T-Mobile is requiring that you get your equipment from them, but eventually you will be able to use any hotspot. Either way, there is no fee per location....it's just one monthly fee...if you decide to have equipment in more than one location,you'll need to pay t-mobile for each UMA router you buy. |

if you have T-Mobile you get free WiFi Access at any HotSpot, well at least i always have. You just punch in your telephone number and your site password. so for customers that have t-mobile cell phones this would be great because i would rather use my cell phone with my VoIP at home or at a hotspot and it be free (assuming that you have vonage or whatever voip service already) plus then you can cut your plan back a lot and save more money on mins |

The implication is that they are going to require you to have their equipment at home if you want to use this at home, and charge a monthly fee for the service in addition to the already-too-high cellular service. There is no benefit to them to do it for "free".

...or rather the newer one with HSDPA, called MDA Vario II in EU (not available here), originally HTC TyTn aka Hermes (one has a jog wheel):»www.europe.htc.com/products/
Expensive but very cool: WiFi, quad-band, 400MHz CPU, full slide-out QWERTY, Windows Mobile 5.0, runs Skype, anything you can ask for.
The older one is available here under the name MDA from TMO ( Cingular also has it) - it's MDA Vario in EU - and despite its slower Texas CPU it also runs Skype just fine and much cheaper.
Hmmm... this one is cheaper but for the long run HSDPA is a must-have...
The newer one just been introduced in Germany, UK, coming in Hungary, Austria, The Netherlands within weeks... hmmm... |

Kapil is correct. The phone works with any T-Mobile hotspot and/or any wifi network it can find and latch onto. Which means it's not tied to just their wifi home router. I think there's a way to also help the handset connect to WPA networks. |

Essentially it replicated the tower inside your home except of Wifi and then uses the internet as the backhaul so the probabillity of this being hacked is slim. |
